Pinterest in a cookbook

This is like Pinterest in a cookbook without the confusing mommy-blog narration about how the kids are in school and she’s gaining weight. It’s great!

Pictures of the recipes are included in an attached PDF and there’s a clickable TOC, narrowed down by category, that us readers can use- it’s really quite convenient. The true advantage is that because it’s a Kindle book I can just go to the search bar, type in ‘yogurt’ or some other ingredient and I’m able to see what recipes it’s listed in as Kindle searches through to see where the word is mentioned.

The best part, besides the formatting, would have to be the encouraging tone that the author uses throughout it- Jamie’s a friend, ready to help us! The tonality is really a nice touch, and I’ve already pinned this to the top of my Kindle page for easy access.

Awesome dessert cookbook

We go to way too many holiday parties and tend to see the same people at most of them. So, in order to change up the desserts that we take to some of these, I picked up author Jamie Stewart's new "Dessert Cookbook." There are some wonderful dessert selections in here and we've made several at home just to test out already. A few of our favorites so far are the Walnut Pumpkin Cookies, the Everyday Family Fudge, and the Chocolate Cherry Cake. Every recipe is very easy to make and well-explained. Definitely recommend this one if you're looking for a comprehensive dessert cookbook.

From this unusual perspective of being both a doctor and someone trying to cope with a frightening diagnosis, I have gained huge insight into the emotional devastation that thyroid cancer patients can face when dealing with this life-changing diagnosis. And that’s even before they start navigating the medical system. Crucially, a thyroid cancer diagnosis will most likely force you to confront some of the bigger questions in life. Up until now you may have conveniently avoided them (I certainly had!). Having lived through such an experience, I initially found it to be hugely unpleasant. However, having also been able to emerge out of it (with help) to live a much more fulfilling and positive existence, I have written this to try to help make the experience for others be less painful than mine. This book is a practical and emotional support that will help you get through and beyond your diagnosis of thyroid cancer. This is a great book....

"This is a great book for giving ideas of ways of tackling problems that hit us in our lives. The author himself had recently had a life threatening condition which has coloured his, already thoughtful, and attentive, way of dealing with his patients into greater depths of understanding. He describes that the only certainties in life are taxes and death, and we think a lot more about taxes. In this book he points out that the certainty that we ignore like the elephant in the room, can be harnessed and even end up working in our favour during the time we have in this mortal coil. Even though I do not have thyroid cancer (I think) this was a very readable and uplifting book and I recommend it to anyone with uncertainties, obviously with thyroid problems, but even life in general."

A very helpful reassuring guide from a doctor who's also a patient

I was advised by a family member to read this book, and it proved to be great advice. Dr. Tom offers a practical guide through the medical and emotional journey of dealing with a thyroid cancer diagnosis. But it's more than that - it's also a gentle dose of life-coaching, helping all patients affected by this disease to get the most out of every day.

Dr. Tom has undergone a life-threatening diagnosis himself, giving him a unique perspective from both sides of the treatment room. The result
is a very reassuring, user-friendly read that I think would benefit patients of many life-threatening conditions, not just thyroid cancer.

I very rarely review things, but having read this book, I know that it will make a real difference to some people's lives. So I felt compelled to get off my saggy butt and give it 5 stars.

Tales of Numenor and of Middle Earth History

Unfinished Tales came out in the Fall of 1980, much to everyone’s surprise. This book contains many tales that were briefly mentioned in the form of lays in The Lord of the Rings (LOTR), and one story, Narn i Hin Hurin, the longest in this book, expands the story of Turan Turambar in The Silmarillion, telling it in its completion, to which Chapter 21, Of Turin Turmabar, is but the middle and end of the story. This later came out as one complete book, The Children of Hurin. Another story, Of Tuor and His Coming to Gondolin, is sort of a preface to The Silmarillion’s “Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin.”
This book is divided into four sections, covering the First, Second, and Third Age of Middle Earth, with Part Four being extra information, especially the history of wizards (Istari), the Druedain (with a fable as a bonus), and the history of the palantirs.
In a sense, these are unfinished tales, where some break off, others give more than one version, with notes from the editor (Christopher Tolkien) at the end of each story. Sometimes, you, the reader have to decide the ending. The main point is that this book tries to give an expanded history of Middle Earth with stories either briefly mentioned in The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, or, and this is better, tell stories of set in certain times and places where the reader never before expected.
One tale is of Numenor, of a Mariner who loved the sea, but is also an heir to the Numenorean throne. He marries a woman who never wants to leave her land, and resents her husband going to sea all the time, leading to a lot of strife between the couple. At the end of the story, and here, you must read the notes, is revealed why, and has quite a surprise ending.
Another story covers Amroth and Nimrodel, told as a poem or song by Legolas in The Fellowship of the Ring, while the fellowship was in Lothlorien, but laid out in great detail here. There are stories mentioned in the trilogy that are more detailed that would otherwise have gone unnoticed by many readers of the LOTR trilogy. One chapter can serve as a prologue to The Hobbit, where Gandalf meets up with Thorin Oakenshield before going to The Shire to meet unsuspecting Bilbo Baggins, and there is mention of how Smaug must be destroyed before Sauron makes use of him in his scheme for world domination. This is mentioned in The Hobbit movie, so you can see that Peter Jackson has taken material out of this book for both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Here, I would recommend that you save this chapter and read it before you read, or reread, The Hobbit.
Other stories include the origins of Galadriel and Celeborn, and why they remained in Middle Earth for three ages, and stories of the Third Age, left out of The Lord of the Rings, but could have been in the appendices, such as the origins of Rohan and its people, the Hunt for the Ring, and Gollum.
In Part Four, there are three pieces of history, one being the history of the order of the wizards, and how Saruman, despite his position has head of his order, became jealous, leading to his downfall. As a bonus, the two blue wizards, whom you never meet, are named and is said that they went into the East of Middle Earth, where the reader never ventures.
These stories do appear to be unfinished, but they do give out enough information to entertain the reader and give him a better understanding of the history of Middle Earth, leading to a better understand of the trilogy, and also the movies, especially The Hobbit.
I do recommend that you read in between the lines. That is, the small print because you will catch a few fables of the three ages, reflecting not only Middle Earth, but individuals previously unknown, being both humans and elves, and places you normally would never go, or imagine.
This book is definitely worth adding to your Tolkien library, and worth multiple readings along with The Silmarillion and The Hobbit, as well as the trilogy.

About the Author
Christopher Shores served in the ATC and RAF during the 1950s and produced his first book, Aces High, in 1966. By profession a chartered surveyor, Christopher Shores worked in the commercial property market for more than 40 years. Retired in mid-2000, he continues to be a consultant, but is now able to devote much more of his time and energy to aviation research and writing.

Chris Thomas worked for more than 30 years as a civilian air traffic controller. He is the son of a 2nd TAF pilot and co-authored The Typhoon and Tempest Story with Christopher Shores following a long-running series in Le Fanatique de l'Aviation. He has a wide interest in military aviation and has provided illustrations for a number of books and periodicals, including The JG 26 Album and Under the Guns of the Red Baron, as well as cover paintings for more than 20 publications.

Nothing less than superb

This fourth volume on 2 TAF is the fruit of many years invested in research on the part of the authors: Christopher Shores has a long list of publications to his name ([...]) as does Chris Thomas ([...]), who is acknowledged as an expert on the Hawker Typhoon and Tempest family. As such I had no hesitation about buying this book.

The book covers a great deal of new technical information which has been uncovered by the authors; two examples worth mentioning: there is now solid evidence that late series Typhoons, and some earlier production aircraft, were fitted with a "tropical" air filtering system installed in a fairing underneath the centre fuselage, and there is also good information about the "E" armament carried by 2 TAF Spitfire IX, XVIs and XIVs. For modellers, there is some excellent information on colour schemes and tactical markings carried by 2 TAF aircraft, as well as information on some colourful post-war squadron and individual markings; much of this is covered with colour artwork and photos of individual aircraft.

As an example of the care taken by the authors Chapter 21 "Addenda, Corrigenda and errata to 2nd TAF Volumes I-III" adds to or alters or corrects information covered in the previous volumes, much of it after receiving correspondence generated by the previous volumes.

All in all, for anyone interested in 2 TAF, the RAF, or WW II aircraft and operations this book - along with the other volumes - is an extremely good investment.

Tach. Air fans need this book

I found these too late, only have vol.4 and it's fantastic. I'm a big WWII tach.air fan. Typhoon and P-47. But I'm short on Typhoon material. Very happy I found this and will be searching for the other three volumes. GREAT INFO.

Christopher Shores and Chris Thomas, are experienced and knowledgeable authors, who wrote several books about 2nd Tactical Air Force before, completed their brilliant 2nd TAF`s monograph with fourth volume entitled 2nd Tactical Air Force, Squadrons, Camouflage and Markings, Weapons and Tactics 1943-1945. It was published - as three previous volumes - by Classic Publications (imprint of Ian Allan Publishing), in good quality paper with hardcover and hundreds of marvelous pictures inside.
Fruits of long-lasting researches done by authors are easily visible when reading the book. Whole record of the amazing photographs, veterans` memoirs and RAF archives completed the book. Moreover, interesting drawings and plates have been added. They shows aircrafts paintings and markings, tactical formations or even operational day of Advanced Landing Ground during the climax of battle in Normandy.
2nd TAF Volume Four, in 179 pages and ten chapters focus on the threads that were mentioned in previous volumes, but now authors gave us very detailed look on such important factors like tactics, weapons, training, camouflage and markings, squadrons` OOB (and comparison with the Luftwaffe units) or sad disbandment of the 2nd TAF. There are also two stories told by eye-witnesses of the 2nd TAF operational history. One comes from a RAF Regiment 309th Mobile Signals Servicing Unit and gives more light on such unknown matter as service of maintaining signals & proper functions of the airfield on the frontline. Second is a diary of the ground crew member and remembers sorties flown during the great operation Plunder.
2nd Tactical Air Force is not so well known and popular within writes and historians as other big Allied air forces, for example The Mighty Eight. However, it had a extraordinary influence on the events that took place in North West Europe from 1943 onwards. Thanks to Christopher Shores and Chris Thomas, history of the 2nd TAF will not stay undiscovered. Theirs book covers all the aspects of the 2nd Tactical Air Force, making the whole monograph successful and must-read for every history & military aviation enthusiast!

If you use LaTeX every day, this is the book to get

There are easier introductions to LaTeX (including many on-line from various university courses) but when it comes to doing difficult things this is the book. I have both the German version (3 volumes) and the 3rd English version of this. Typical German thoroughness -- a very extensive index, lists of commands and symbols, clear and concise explanations. As another reviewer says, it's not for the beginner. You can indeed learn LaTeX from this book (first several chapters are simpler) but it is oriented to the person using LaTeX all the time. Especially nice are the detailed explanations of tables, page layout, math mode (both standard LaTeX and AMSLaTeX). There's no disguising that it takes time and effort to get into LaTeX, but the results are well worth it. When you have a difficult usage question, this book will help you find the answer in minimum time.

The best guide for everyday use

For anyone coming to LaTeX from a background in mathematics many sources of help are available, but it is more difficult for someone coming to it from a feeling of dissatisfaction with the results obtainable with typical WYSIWYG word processors. When you are surrounded by people who think that Word is wonderful and that its equation editor can handle any equations you need, getting to the point with LaTeX where you can use it to advantage may seem more trouble than it is worth. You will probably start with Leslie Lamport's LaTeX: A Document Preparation System, but although that is a good and authoritative start it is not really enough, as there is a great deal more to know than can be found in a short book, and in particular you need to know about all that is now available in the form of packages.

Fortunately there are some excellent sources of more detailed information, and two of these stand out: Kopka and Daly's "Guide to LaTeX" and Mittelbach and Goossens's LaTeX Companion. I acquired both of these about six months ago, but decided to defer posting reviews until I had discovered by experience which of them I actually used more, and the winner is clearly Kopka and Daly, mainly because it is much the easier to find one's way around. It is quite adequate as a complete guide to LaTeX (i.e. you don't really need to start with Lamport, though it's probably a good idea if you do), as the opening chapter on "basics" really is about basics, and the book progresses from there in a reasonably gentle way.

Great reference for Latex

I think that this book is a great reference for those that have already some familiarity with Latex. It covers pretty much any aspect that one needs to be effective in Latex. One of the best parts about this book is that there is an appendix which has the syntax of most commands in Latex. I do not own the third edition but I have done a side by side comparison of it with the fourth edition. In general the material all the same minus some formatting differences. I noticed that one chapter did not make it from the third edition to the fourth which was on class writing. Instead a chpater on modifying pre-existing classes was included.

If you already own the third edition, then this may not be as substantial revision to warrant the purchase of this edition, but I do like the new layout of this edition compared to the third.

BEWARE. I do not think that this is best book for those begining Latex. Instead, I recommend "Learning Latex" by D. F. Griffiths and D. J. Higham. This book has the Latex code written right next to how it would appear.
