Finally, the Truth About Adulthood

The book may not be a page-turner, about which some people seem to be complaining, but its premise couldn't be more profound: "Adulthood" is not a fixed definition by which to judge ourselves, but an ever-changing, highly diverse set of life experiences that varies from person to person, culture to culture, and century to century. To judge any adult life by today's conservative definition of "marriage, family and work" is both damaging and extremely limiting, an observation which Mintz's facts make abundantly clear. More importantly, to use this narrow-minded definition as "...a yardstick by which all trends and social movements are measured [suggests] not just an unhealthy romanticizing of that era but a collective aversion to cultural complexity - one that affects everything from national policy to individual self-esteem." These are not my words, but Meghan Daum's, in her review of the book in the New York Times. I couldn't have said it better myself.

Chronicling Four Hundred Years of American Family Life

THE PRIME OF LIFE covers an ambitious canvas, as it tries to tell the story of the socially-produced concept of adulthood from the seventeenth century to the present. Through a series of elegantly researched chapters, Mintz focuses on different aspects of the topic, including adolescence, young adulthood, marriage, alternatives to marriage, family life, different constructions of family, and the ways in which human beings have coped with the wok/leisure divide.

And yet the book remains something of a disappointment. Perhaps this is due to the familiarity of the subject-matter: many of the topics covered in THE PRIME OF LIFE have been covered by authors past and present in a form of discourse far more lively than Mintz's rather pedestrian prose. Sometimes it feels as if he has sacrificed originality for comprehensiveness; by trying to cover four hundred years of family life in three hundred pages, he summons up a wealth of evidence but remains short on analysis.

Perhaps the disappointment is also due to a certain degree of cross-cultural myopia. Although specifically focused on American family life, Mintz could have made more comparisons with other countries - not just Great Britain, but other European and Asian nations as well. Sometimes his claims to uniqueness about American family life seem rather hollow; many of the elements he identifies are common to families worldwide.

Or maybe it's just because of the conclusion - after three hundred pages of closely-worded argument, he advises those in late maturity to set aside their problems and look instead at the positive sides of their lives; their ability to make sense of the world through experience, and their feeling that they have achieved something. This advice seems banal, to say the least; many adults have neither the time nor the opportunity to make such reflections, as they struggle to survive in economically stringent times. Even if we do have the capacity to reflect, perhaps we should be looking for new possibilties; in other words, rediscovering our childlike capacity for wonder, rather than trusting in our experience.

THE PRIME OF LIFE is a good dipping-book but rather a tiresome read as a whole.

A wonderful book that helps establish a daily face to face time with the Lord in His word, while helping open up the Old Testament scriptures to see in great detail how God would carry out His great salvation in joining His chosen people to Christ for His eternal dwelling. Jeff Crippen's sermon series on domestic abuse published on Sermon Audio led to his first book, A Cry for Justice: How the Evil of Domestic Abuse Hides in Your Church and the blog cryingoutforjustice.com. He has been a pastor for over thirty years, more than twenty of those with the people of Christ Reformation Church in Tillamook, Oregon, his partners in crying out for justice. He and his wife Verla have been married for over forty years and have two adult children.

Rebecca Davis is a a writer and editor with a passion to help the oppressed.

A balm for a proverbial wound

I found Pastor Crippen's first book shortly after I separated from my now ex-husband almost 3 years ago. I had been married for 16 years to an verbally abusive sex addict. The first book gave me such closure from 16 years worth of unanswered questions, it was literally like a balm for a gaping wound. I often refer to his first book when I have questions in my life about my ex. But...this book -- Wow. I bought it a few days before what would have been my 18th wedding anniversary and waited to read it on that very day. I read it in one sitting, along with a highlighter that I literally used up highlighting verses and wisdom. This book saved me from another day, another hour, another moment of despair. The wisdom that I gleaned in this book is so powerful, so liberating, it has allowed me to stop feeling guilty for the divorce and start the healthy process of healing and moving on. After being ostracized from the church I had attended for many years due to the lies my ex spread about me before, during, and after the divorce process, I now understand my ex-husband's evil and unholy charade. Thank you, Pastor Crippen, from the bottom of my heart. Your work and ministry are God's gift to the world.

world-changing truth

If I could give this book 100 stars, I would. It's about time the issue of abuse was addressed by the 'church'. We are the ones who are supposed to be addressing these issues, not hiding from them. Thank God for people like these authors who have the guts to speak up for victims of abuse, exposing the tactics and mindset of the abuser, and backing it up with scripture the right way instead of twisting it as some very well known pastors have done. If you have been a victim of abuse, or know a victim of abuse, I HIGHLY recommend this book as a valuable resource.

What Every Pastor Needs to Know

This is the book that should be required reading in every seminary. For too many years the church has covered up abuse of the worse kind while enabling the abusers to continue their evil work. Jesus hates that. In fact, Jesus said it was better that a millstone be tied around the person and them thrown into the sea than to hurt one of God's little children, but today far too many church leaders have forgotten that.

This books is such a timely message that needs to be read and reread and fully absorbed. Jeff Crippen does a powerful job of ripping off the cover of the ways that manipulators work to expose the hidden works of darkness. This is a very easy to absorb, fascinating and well-written manual on how to recognize the good from the bad. Jesus told us that we would know them by their fruit---Jeff really helps us understand how to recognize the fruit in practical ways.

God forgive us for allowing this to go on for far too long because the ministry was more important than the people-----if Jesus would have died for even just one person then how can the church keep allowing abusers into positions of leadership where they can access way too many people? Since abusers are highly skilled at pulling the wool over everyone----this is the book that helps you see clearly what's really happening. Thank you Jeff for writing what everyone else is afraid to say.

He and the siblings set out to foil the evildoers' plan, which includes controlling people by stealing their souls. Many important details remain unexplained: Sebastian's magical powers, de Loud�ac's return from the dead, and the origin of the frightening visions–or are they real?–that pursue the twins as they track down the wodwo and the alchemist. Gr. 5-8. Junior high has begun for new kids Pip and Tim, but it offers little escape from the terrors of Doctor Illuminatus (2004), the first book in Booth's The Alchemist's Son series. It seems their homeroom teacher is a reincarnated fifteenth-century mage specializing in mind control. Compounding that bad luck is the task of training Sebastian, a medieval good guy only recently awakened from a state of suspended animation, to pose as a student so he can keep an eye on things. The trio thwarts a wildly improbable plot to adapt England's nuclear energy infrastructure as a delivery system for evil. Leavening the dire goings-on are incidents of cultural disconnect between the twins and their courtly, humorless companion, inserted with such an air of dogged effort that few readers will find that they fulfill their intended function. Offer this to those who enjoyed the first book; they likely won't mind the focus on action over plausibility. Soul stealing

Martin Booth's teenage alchemist returns in "Soul Stealer: The Alchemist's Son Part II," a somewhat shaky but somewhat stronger fantasy thriller. It's a more entertaining, creepy adventure, though the "alchemist's son" of the title is the book's biggest weakness.

Tim and Pip are about to start at their new school, which would seem normal if Sebastian had not given her an "evil detector" pendant. The two of them soon discover that not all is well at their school: One of the teachers, Yoland, is an evil magician who helped kill his father, and the local bully Guy Scrotton is an undead wodewose ("wild man").

So Pip and Guy take their riskiest step yet: Enrolling Sebastian in a modern high school. The three teenagers begin searching for Yoland's master plan, while trying to keep the savage Scrotton from ripping them to shreds. Then they learn that his plot may have something to do with their upcoming field trip... to a nuclear plant.

"Soul Stealer" has something of the same general plot as "Doctor Illuminatus" -- teen heroes, cameo by Satan, megalomaniacal sorcerers, beast-men, sheep with fangs, computer hacking, and some creepy medieval alchemy. It wouldn't take much more than that to make a really entertaining fantasy thriller.

And to some degree, the book is more engaging than its predecessor. It has a strong unifying plot, more descriptive prose and fewer brand names. Booth has obviously gotten a handle on his storytelling, now that he has introduced the main characters. What's more, he has some truly chilling villains, especially the savage wodewose Scrotton.

Sebastian the teenage alchemist is the biggest problem of the book. He comes across as rigid and humourless, useful mainly for historical background. Putting him in a typical school setting could have given the book some much-needed humour, and shown Sebastian in a more human light, but it never happens. Worse, Booth uses Sebastian to spout bits of historical minutiae that aren't really relevant.

The "alchemist's son" is a major weakness, but the "Soul Stealer" is a stronger second installment in Martin Booth's series. Flawed, but worth reading.

A Good Read

Soul Stealer, the sequel to Alchemist's Son is a wonderful book. It brings that touch of fantasy in without going over the board and tipping it into a different world. The setting is in England and although you occassionally forget that, the author is very good at reminding you. I would rate it five stars but for one thing. These books were obviously supposed to be part of series, unfortunately the author died the year after publishing Soul Stealer. So while any good book leaves you wanting more, this one leaves you wanting just a bit too much more.

About the Author

Joel Peters is Professor of Government and International Affairs in the School of Public and International Affairs at Virginia Tech. His research interests cover Israeli security and foreign policy and the Israeli-Palestinian process. He is the co-author (with Sharon Pardo) of Uneasy Neighbors: Israel and the European Union.

David Newman is Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Ben Gurion University in Israel. Originally a geographer, Newman founded the Department of Politics and Government at that University. He is chief editor of the peer reviewed journal, Geopolitics. His work focuses on territorial dimensions of ethnic conflict with a particular focus on the contemporary significance and functions of borders.

About the Author
John Glaser is Superintendent of the Napa Valley Unified School District in Napa, California. He was the founding partner of Glaser and Associates, a consulting firm focusing on effective interpersonal learning in individuals and organizations. Throughout his professional life he has explored the nature of dynamic leadership and how people come together to produce more powerful outcomes. His consulting experiences have included a general focus on organizational development, as well as specific training, mediation, and facilitation work with joint labor relations initiatives. Glaser was formerly an associate professor of Organizational Leadership at the University of La Verne in La Verne, California. He received his doctorate in education from the University of California, Berkeley. He can be contacted at jglaser@prodigy.net.

Excellent book for leaders

Leading Through Collaboration is loaded with practical tools to help any leader deal more effectively with conflict. The book is not just theory; it is loaded with real examples from the author's wealth of experience. He writes about how effective collaboration requires both attitudes and skills and he helps readers develop both. I've mediated over 1,500 employment disputes and this is one of the best books I've seen on facilitating collaborative problem solving. I strongly recommend it.

Required for college class. Would not have been my first choice. Book could have been half the size if it just relayed facts and the author stayed away from personal stories.
