Allison Bergman, a director, dramaturg, writer, and educator, is a former artistic director of Broadway on Sunset and the cofounder of the West Coast Musical Theater Conference. She lives in New York City.

Tracey Moore is an actress and singer who appeared in the national Broadway tours of Camelot and Ragtime, as well as many other productions. The former head of voice and movement at Florida International University, she lives in New York City.

Great tool for directors and students

I have been directing high school musicals for the past decade, and found this book to be a breath of fresh air. After a while, you feel like you know every technique, game, or way to illicit a response from a student or performance, but this book brought some brand new stuff to the table.
I really liked the way concepts are broken down so a beginner can start at the beginning, and a more advanced actor/director can skip to the meatier parts.
Well written, with examples of exercises broken down, this has become a great resource for me.

This is an excellent and informative book if you are a teacher looking for ways to help young people interpret musical theatre songs. If you are a classically trained musician looking for help on technique, the book is not it as it is very general. If you would like to dive further into the material, the book does provide footnotes.

About the Author
Joseph Campbell was interested in mythology since his childhood in New York, when he read books about American Indians, frequently visited the American Museum of Natural History, and was fascinated by the museum's collection of totem poles. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees at Columbia in 1925 and 1927 and went on to study medieval French and Sanskrit at the universities of Paris and Munich. After a period in California, where he encountered John Steinbeck and the biologist Ed Ricketts, he taught at the Canterbury School, then, in 1934, joined the literature department at Sarah Lawrence College, a post he retained for many years. During the 1940s and '50s, he helped Swami Nikhilananda to translate the Upanishads and The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna. The many books by Professor Campbell include The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Myths to Live By, The Flight of the Wild Gander, and The Mythic Image. He edited The Portable Arabian Nights, The Portable Jung, and other works. He died in 1987.

This book is a massive summary, comparison of, and commentary on oriental mythology. It is divided into 3 major parts: Western Oriental mythology, Indian mythology, and the mythologies of the Far East. Campbell's incredible scholarship is very impressive, and rather overwhelming at times. He obviously had a great familiarity with the mythologies and religions of practically all areas of the planet. However, his explanations for general readers of foreign mythologies weren't always clear, as evidenced in this book. Much of this book focuses on developing the idea that Oriental mythologies had one major origin, in the Egypt of the Pharaohs. According to Campbell, traces of the religion and mythologies of the Pharaohs, as well as implements of their material culture, could subsequently be found in every major culture heading eastward, from Persia to India, from China to Japan.
This idea is not exactly clear in the beginning of the work, and the initial chapters about the Pharaohs start with a jerk, leaving some readers wondering "Why start here, so far west?" The idea is stated more and more explicitly as the book progresses, so that by the time we reach the Chinese section, Campbell writes about the "primacy of the West-to-East cultural flow". Later in the same section, Campbell writes "the question of the impact of sentiments and ideas carried from one domain to another, which is basic to our study, is ...well illustrated by the annals of the settlement of Buddhism in China..." Is there really enough evidence to support the idea of a single common mythology that spread from West to East? Is this theory accepted by modern specialists in mythology? A reader who comes to this book independently of a class or other mythology background can only speculate on these questions.
Campbell does a masterful job of laying out similarities across cultures, such as his description of the "archetypal Savior Biography", where he lists the following elements (among others):
--scion of a royal line
--miraculously born
--amid supernatural phenomena
--of whom an aged holy man prophesies a world-saving message
--whose childhood deeds proclaim his divine character
--engages in arduous forest disciplines
--which confront him with a supernatural adversary
He points out that this list applies to the Jains, Buddhists, as well as Christians, and, if I read him correctly, presents it as one piece of evidence for linkage between Western and Oriental mythologies.
The lucidity of Campbell's descriptions and summaries of myths vary. Sometimes he quotes stories or myths at great length. But other times, he passes over the details quickly with such statements as "We need not rehearse the legends of his miraculous birth..." in his haste to get to commentary about the stories in question. For newcomers to the topic, this can be somewhat of a disappointment, since the commentaries are difficult to understand if one is not already familiar with the stories, and it is to learn about the stories themselves that some readers pick up this book. The book itself seems to have developed from Campbell's notes. Thus, there is considerable explicit enumeration of points, as well as the occasional sentence fragment. This style of writing requires very active study from a reader who is determined to wrestle the kernel of meaning from Campbell's words.
The one disappointing chapter was the chapter on Tibet, which actually includes only a few paragraphs about the mythology of Tibet. The remainder of the chapter is a brief collection of ideas from Maoist communism, juxtaposed with stories of atrocities during the Chinese takeover of Tibet. While the story of Tibet is indeed extremely lamentable, perhaps these details would better fit in a political description of Tibet in order to make more room for an overview of Tibetan mythology.

Uneven but fascinating commentary

"Oriental Mythology" is the second in the "Masks of God" series, the follow up to "Primitive Mythology". It covers more of the mind boggling extent of humankind's mythic past, material that is the basis for religion and philosophy. Campbell presents all sorts of details from artifacts dug up by archeologists and some rather long-winded quoted passages. Much of it is rather uneven and challenging to follow, but the payoff is usually Campbell's own commentary which often uses a soaring language to elucidate, to associate and connect different myths of different cultures.

The especially fascinating part of the book for me concerns the mystery of how yoga philosophy and practice came into being and evolved as it did to different forms such as Buddhism and Hinduism. Yoga philosophy defines a very different state of being than the Abrahamic tradition of the West. It does not situate humankind in a state of sin and guilt, stranded in a corrupt world, alienated from a transcendent God; but rather, in a state of ignorance with knowledge as the key to escaping from inevitable suffering caused by the delusion of living in a material world. The ancient civilization in the Indus Valley contains seeds of it's development, but it is far from clear just how it developed and what role the Aryans, who invaded and plundered India, played. In any event, Campbell concludes "tentatively" that yoga is "indigenous" to India.

The many different forms and manifestations of Buddhism follow from the ancient yoga tradition of asceticism. The book is not an good introduction to Buddhism, and it can be difficult to distinguish between the many sects and their different metaphysics and practices. It's influence burgeoned and then waned in India, but spread throughout the Far East, and combined with the Native nature religions of Tao in China and Shinto in Japan. Though Buddhism in whatever form mainly involves a turning away from the affairs of the world, from what is shown here, it has hardly ever failed to provide a civilizing influence.

I have to echo some of the criticisms of other reviewers. The inclusion of a chapter on ancient Egypt and also a section on the hieratic city states of Mesopotamia do not go the way of clarifying how Oriental myth grew as it did. The organization of the book would have been a lot more straightforward if he had gone directly from the introduction, in which Campbell compares East with West, to ancient India and directly to the mysteries of the Orient. He seeks to trace the influence of Egypt and Mesopotamia to the East, but the influences are so scattered and so relative, that it would have been better to have stuck with India, China, and Japan. Also, the final section on Tibet, although illuminating, departs in large measure from the subject matter.

Actually very good

I just finished this book and came onto Amazon looking for similar book recommendations. I read the review about the 'shill' reviews, and I can see what you mean. The reviewers (including myself) haven't reviewed anything else. But this book was actually very good, even if the other reviewers were friends of the author.

I really enjoyed the characters and the character growth. I really empathized with the main character - I was frustrated (at men!), upset and sad with her. I learned a lot of interesting historical facts, but it was never teach-y. The romance wasn't over-the-top, although the main character did seem to be interested in a large number of men (but I guess in the West where there are a limited number of women and lots of men are throwing themselves at you, that could be understandable). There was also an odd change of point-of-view in the beginning - the author wrote a bit from Tim's point-of-view, when she never deviated from Aislynn's before or after.

Now I may have to go write a bunch of other reviews to make this one valid, but the bottom line is that, for me, this book is extremely enjoyable and well worth the money!

Good story but...

I loved this story. The author's characters are well fleshed-out. However, I found that the errors made me crazy. Maybe it is just the kindle version that needs some additional editing, but having errors like, pronouns misused, naming people incorrectly, and lack of punctuation just bothers me. I found I had to re-read parts to figure out what the heck was going on. I did enjoy the book if my grousing doesn't turn anyone off!

Eagerly waiting for the sequel!

Some writers excel at creating a world we want to succumb to, while others master the dynamics of a story that has the power to affect our sense of humanity. I feel that Susan Denning has found THE balance. Because I come from a filmmaking perspective, I especially enjoyed her skill at immediately grabbing the reader by the collar and dropping him in Aislynn's meticulously crafted world - the smells, the textures, the social dynamic, the moral compass of that time. And I found myself smiling with gratitude when, by page two, I realized I wanted to remain in that world. And I did, and left only when I unfortunately had to, at the end of Aislynn's journey from the girl she was to the woman she was always meant to become. I am ready, Mrs. Denning, as some of your other reviewers also seem to be, to be there for her next journey.
This is not a book you read; it is a book you experience. I hope that many, many, many get to enjoy it.

good luck.

Appears comprehensive, but I found two errors on the first person I looked up (Eli Bosworth). First a typo (1979 instead of 1779), the second a cut-and-paste error (wrong husband for his granddaughter Sarah). Makes me wonder about the rest of the book.
My biggest complaint is the lack of any kind of acronym / abbreviation list. Many are obvious, such as “b” for born. But if you are new to genealogy and don’t know what dozens of others, such as MSSR or VR stand for, good luck.

Hard to find book about an early Antarctic expedition

Otto Nordenskjold's 1901 expedition to the east side of the Antarctic Peninsula usually is only heard of in quick references in books about Scott, Amundsen or Shackleton, but here is a chance to read his account of the entire adventure. A Swede, Nordenskjold doesn't have quite the gift of narrative in English that many of his exploring peers were (perhaps surprisingly) endowed with, and he spends a little too much time telling us the details of the rocks he finds and similar trivialities. But the underlying story is really pretty good, and in the hands of a Roland Huntford could probably be made quite gripping. Dropped on Snow Hill Island, Nordenskjold and his cohorts plan to become the first people to winter on land in the Antarctic. Their ship then returns to Argentina while they erect the pre-fab house they've brought with them. Well stocked with food, they have a fairly easy time of things through the winter days, which though often very stormy are at least not that terribly dark, since this part of Antarctica is no further south than Reykjavik Iceland is north. But in the spring they find that there is pack ice off shore as far as they eye can see, and it doesn't break up. They begin to realize they shouldn't have been quite so free with their food and start slaughtering penguins and seals in case they have to stay another winter, which in fact they do.

Meanwhile, their ship is trying to get through to them but is frustrated by the ice at every turn. Ultimately they drop part of their company off on the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula with the hope that these three can make it to the hut on Snow Island with news of what's happening. But instead, this relief team is also stranded as a result of ice conditions, and in much worse shape than the Snow Hill company, since they have very limited supplies. They build a rude hut out of stones and the canvas from their tents, and ride out the following winter in misery.

Meanwhile the ship becomes locked in the ice and is crushed, going to the bottom. The crew escapes to the nearby pack ice and although they struggle to make headway towards land, they are totally at the mercy of the drift, which can easily move them in the wrong direction 4 times the distance they can walk in one day. But by a near miracle, the ice brings them to the shore of Paulet Island, and there they too build a hut and lay down a supply of penguins and seals for the winter.

In a period of a couple of climactic weeks the next spring, a party sent out from Snow Hill encounters the trio from the Antarctic Peninsula coming to look for them, and an Argentinian relief vessel arrives at Snow Hill very shortly after. While they are loading their geological samples onto the ship, a team arrives from Paulet Island. Since the outside world was only aware of the location of the Snow Hill group, it would have been like searching for a needle in a haystack for the Argentine ship to try to find the others had they not found their way to Snow Hill just in time.

A skilled writer could have really brought the drama of this climax out sharply, but Nordenskjold hands the writing responsibility for the other two teams to their leaders, and the impact is watered down significantly as a result. But the book is still a classic of polar exploration, and if you've already read all the Shackleton, Scott, Amundsen and Mawson stories, this is as good as something like "Through The First Antarctic Night" - Frederick Cook's book about the Belgica expedition.

This version of the book is kind of a nice idea - it's old enough to be past it's copyright and the publisher has simply scanned an old copy of the original and then printed it. Given that there's little chance you could financially justify typesetting and printing a fresh edition, this is probably the only way this book is likely to be made available anytime soon. It's as big as an auto-supply catalog as a result of the way it was made and it's a bit heavy to carry around if you like reading on airplanes. It appears that a fold out map came with the original book that is not included in the reproduction, but I found a good surrogate in Google Images and printed a copy to keep with me as I read. I also have no idea what the publisher thinks the cover photo has to do with the story - it looks like a railway in North Dakota, and there are certainly no landscapes like this - with or without the tracks - anywhere in Antarctica. Seems like finding a photo of Antarctica shouldn't have been that hard.

But that's nit-picking - I had looked for this book for several years, and though I'd rather have had an original, the main thing is to get to read it, and this version meets that need.
