Toolbox for the SeriousTrader

This is the toolbox for serious responsible trading...the kind of trading that is run like a real business and not like a gambling hobby/addiction. The author carefully covers the often neglected areas of risk/money mangement. This is a book for those that suffer from innumeracy in regard to trading and wish to be cured of it. You don't need a degree in advanced rocket science to understand this stuff. High school alegebra will do. The explanations and examples make the mathematics of risk and money management about as easy to understand as possible.
Developing a system for trading and forecasting is also included with the emphasis on statistical reasoning. The author even casts serious doubt upon the logic of trying to beat the markets at all by forecasting. Reading this book may even make you want to abandon the idea of trying to make money trading the markets. Read this before you ever committ any money to trading. It may sober you up and keep you from bankruptcy, insanity and suicide.

An interesting read BUT questionable impact on my bottom lin

I recently bought this book. It has an intriging title and most profits do come from money management or as Van Tharp says it "position sizing". I have the Balzara book and Ryan Jones book and am basically using a modified fixed ratio method similar to rayn jones but with some improvements (I think !). The Gehm book made some interesting points but really did not help me get to that next level. I am going tpo re-read it and will come back with additonal comments. One think is clear that the sequence of previous winners and losses have very little do with future winners and losers. An anti-martingale method is the best overall methodology but which variation should you trade ? Optimal f BY mAthe Whiz Ralph Vince cannot be traded due to the hefty drawdown and use of older data to come up with the betting fraction.

Kevin Anderson is accustomed to flying through space on the heels of extraterrestrial beings toward distant galaxies to save the universe. Usually, he's just along for the ride with Han Solo or Princess Leia, but Anderson recently returned to Earth and teamed up with FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully to uncover an X-traordinary tale of phenomenon in Anderson's own backyard.

Jumping from the ships of Star Wars into the shadowy atmosphere of The X-Files is no leap of faith for Anderson, 32. He relishes the science fiction genre and has rocketed him to fame with 14 novels, including his best-selling anthology of short stories, Star Wars: Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina. Anderson and his co-writer, Doug Beason, won a nomination for the Nebula Award for best science-fiction novel with their work on Assemblers of Infinity. Another novel, Ignition, was recently sold to Universal Studios to be made into a major motion picture.

In Ground Zero, Mulder and Scully begin their investigation of unexplained murders at a nuclear research facility, set not far from Anderson's real-life home in Livermore, California, where he resides with his wife Rebecca Moesta and his 8-year-old stepson, Jonathan. It's also the site of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where Anderson was employed as a technical writer/editor for 13 years.

Gillian Anderson, an award-winning actress on the New York stage, is best known for her starring role as Special Agent Dana Scully on the hit Fox television series The X-Files.

The incinerated remnants of Dr. Gregory are found curled in the corner of his laboratory at the Edward Teller Nuclear Research Facility near Oakland, California. since this is a death on Federal property, Mulder and Scully are hastily called in. As FBI agents who specialize in unexplained phenomena, they are the investigators of the X-files, strange and inexplicable cases which are also mysteries that the FBI doesn't want solved. Dr. Gregory's unique death quickly and clearly becomes an X-file. As Mulder and Scully begin their fustrating work, unearthing the top secret project that Dr. Gregory was working on, they confront a tight-lipped Federal bureaucracy whose job it is to stop questions before they are asked. One by one, Mulder and Scully hit dead ends, closed security clearances, and classified documents that no one wants them to see. But that doesn't stop Mulder and Scully from ripping the lid off Dr. Gregory's illegal project --"bright Anvil" --a new type of flash nuclear explosive that has all the destructive power of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs, but with a new design that leaves virtually no radioactive fallout. The implications for the modern world are deadly, and some radical protest groups will stop at nothing to prevent the test from happening. This book is an excellent choice for a sci-fi fan who loves the 'unexplained' or the 'unknown'. The book is based on the television show The X-Files. Mr. Kevin J. Anderson uses the usual characters Mulder and Scully as FBI agents investigating unusual cases.
A small area in Pleasanton, California at the Nuclear Research Facility, a nuclear scientist, Dr. Emil Gregory is experimenting with what he called the Bright Anvil Project. He was also a minor technician for the Manhattan Project half a century ago. Peace protesters constantly bother him outside of his office; at the same time the Energy Department is very anxious to see his developments. Something goes wrong late one evening lights flicker, an intense humming sound grows, smoke and heat become so unbearable that it hit him in all one swoop and the doctor was charred to a radioactive cinder along with his whole laboratory and research.
This case is brought to the FBI, because of its being on Federal lands, so Mulder and Scully travel down to Little Pleasanton to investigate this bizarre incident. As agent Scully did an autopsy on the Doctor's body she finds strange problems with the way the body was burnt verses the reports and usual burning cases. Was it sabotage by protestors, was it accidental, did the doctor go too far with his work that it killed him, or is it unexplainable...
I highly recommend this book, it's excellent.

Not as advertised

I bought this book as a "new" purchase and paid the new book price. However, it had been gently used. There were some markings including a few circled answers to questions throughout the book. While the markings were relatively minimal, this was unacceptable as a new book purchase.

Out of date

This book was very helpful for my psychiatry clerkship in my 3rd year of medical school (5 years ago). I picked it up for the first time in several years today (as a PGY-3 psychiatry resident), and see that the information is very outdated. The information presented on bipolar depression, for example, would now be considered incorrect. I recommend no one use this edition of the book.

I found this book extremely useful in my preparations for USMLE Step-2.It's a very comprehensive text of psychiatry,covering almost all important topics required for Step-2.It has a lot of board style questions which really helps analyze especially for foreign medical graduates who really don't've a good foundation in Psychiatry.It's very useful for American graduates too.I personally recommend this book to all my fellow mates,in sharing precious knowledge in psychiatry which I found in this book.

Excellent Philogy, Poor Theology

In 1927, G.A. Deissmann published his second volume dealing with New Testament philology, Light from the Ancient East. His purpose is "to show the importance of the non-literary written memorials of the Roman Empire in the period which let up to and witnessed the rise and early development of Christianity." The literary records are primarily memorials of the upper classes, and so to find the lower classes we need to go to the non-literary sources. Deissmann finds these non-literary sources to be of benefit philologically, for literary appreciation of New Testament, and because they help us with understanding of religion and culture. Throughout Light from the Ancient East (LFAE), Deissmann refers to the "new texts." This term is inclusive of three main materials, those being: Inscriptions on stone, metal, etc, Texts on papyrus (and parchments), and Texts on potshards (ostraca). All of these new texts are being discovered in large quantities, and their continued compilation and study can be a great aid in New Testament research. Chapter two of LFAE is on "The Language of the New Testament Illustrated from the New Texts." Deissmann summarizes his argument in saying "the first great impression we receive is that the language to which we are accustomed in the New Testament is on the whole just the kind of Greek that simple, unlearned folk of the Roman Imperial period were in the habit of using." That is the point of all of Deissman's writings, to establish that the Greek of the New Testament is the Greek of the common people. He is concerned about the New Testament being "isolated by the science of language." The bible, according to Deissmann is totally non-literary and popular in language and character, but is still beautiful in a natural way. There are several ways in which the new texts have value to the Scholar. The first is in the Phonology and Accidence of the language. The differences between the New Testament and Plato can be seen in this. The vocabulary of the New Testament is also very similar to that of the papyri. The number of words that occur only in the New Testament and not in new texts is growing very small as the papyri discoveries abound. The new texts also broaden our perspective on the meaning of words. Examples are given of several words where the meaning is very clearly defined by their use in the new texts. Another area in which the papyri give us illumination is that of standing phrases and idioms. When we see them in the papyri, we can better understand them in the bible. Deissmann says that the "Syntax of the New Testament has hitherto been least of all regarded in light of the new texts." That style of Greek had a syntax all its own, and that is often misunderstood by those fluent in Attic and Classical Greek. A result of all of this new information is confirmation that the New Testament is a "book of the people." So, viewing the New Testament as a non-literary document of the common people, in the third chapter Deissmann encourages us to look at the New Testament in relation to ancient literature. He would say "it has not yet sufficiently been viewed" in relation to the history of ancient literature. Literature is defined as "something written for the public... and cast in a definite artistic form." Deissmann reviews the letter/epistle distinction he drew in Bible Studies. He concludes that based on the study of other ancient letters, "in the New Testament there are both non-literary letters and literary epistles." He has "no hesitation" in stating that Paul's writings, along with second and third John are seen as "real letters," or non-literary writings. Conversely, Deissmann sees the letters of James, Peter, and Jude as literary epistles. The book of Hebrews is the most literary of all. As far as characters, "Jesus of Nazareth is altogether unliterary," and Paul is "equally non-literary." So if these characters and these writings are fundamentally non-literary, than the non-literary culture of that day is worth knowing, and the main source of knowledge about them is these "new texts." So, what is the application of Deissman's study? How does his work help our understanding of the New Testament text? This is the subject at hand in chapter four when he addresses Social and Religious History in the New Testament, as illustrated from the New Texts. Jesus interacted with and often made reference to the culture around him. He handled coins, dealt with fishermen, and told parables of everyday life. The inclusion of this in the New Testament, Deissmann believes, is a clue for us to study that culture. In this effort, "the New Testament student will reap a rich harvest from [the new texts]." One area that is illuminated by the New Texts is understanding of the parables and other illustrations used by Jesus. They aid our understanding, because "we are repeatedly able to illustrate from Egyptian papyri details of the life of the people in Palestine which Jesus immortalized in His parables." An example of this is the passages where Jesus discusses the value of a sparrow relative to that of a human, in God's eyes. There is an apparent contradiction in the value of sparrows spoken of in these verses, but by studying receipts and other texts from ancient times, we realize how it fits together. This is a good help, but Deissmann implies that the results of New Text study is much more far reaching, to the extent that "some traditional lines in the picture of the ancient world would have to be altered if we were to try to-day to depict that world after a study of its own records." Deissmann believes that the way we understand the biblical and post-biblical culture in inaccurate, and he goes on to discuss several areas in which he sees this. Understanding of the religious position of the ancient world is aided. While many today believe that the ancient world was totally corrupt and immoral, Deissmann argues that they are only perceived that way because it is not the common people that we hear from. We can see that other religions "competed with Christianity, because they were themselves missionary religions." Deissman also states that certain New Testament ethical concepts are paralleled in ancient pagan religious practice. He would even go so far as to imply that Paul borrowed concepts from secular literature in his writing. A continual emphasis for Deissmann is that the men who wrote the New Testament and those that they interacted with were common men, not of a literary nature. In fact, he affirms, "that these were men of the non-literary classes has been so often indicated in these pages from a variety of points of view, that I should have no objection if this thesis were described as a main feature of my book." This is a good point, but Deissmann almost tends toward postmodernism in his excitement over discovering the "individual souls" of the ancient world. An example of this tendency is the statement, "that ancient world of the insignificant and the many who hungered and thirsted, which seemed to be inaccessible save to the dreamy eye of the seer, and hopelessly lost to the scholar, now rises up before us in the persons of innumerable individuals." However, it is important to know the context of the scriptures we study. Deissmann would say that only those who "have hearts for the common people" should read and study the New Texts and reap the benefits that they provide. Another application of the New Texts is that they aid our understanding of whole groups of thought in the New Testament. One example of this concerns the word lu,tron, which is commonly translated as ransom. We find from the New Texts that "when anybody heard the Greek word lu,tron... in the first century, it was natural for him to think of the purchase-money for manumitting slaves." This perspective, gained from the New Texts, aids our understanding of this word and henceforth our understanding of the passages where it is used. The study of ancient coins for Deissmann yields the idea that Primitive Christianity made religion a serious business. Because of this, he assumes that the New Testament is "not a creature of theology, but religion." It is beyond the scope of this present work to critique the Deissmann's theology, but what is the New Testament if not theology? He also stamps the apostle Paul and Jesus Christ himself as "non-theological," and belonging to the age before theology. While it is true that the New Testament is critical religiously, it is absurd to say that it does not contain theology. Deissmann's final application of his study is to ask the question, what allowed primitive Christianity to gain converts? The first reason he gives is the popular character of Primitive Christianity. He says, "unless this fact is known and well emphasized it is impossible to explain historically the success of the attractive power of the gospel." Another important reason is the presence of miracles, which "gave to the New Testament a singularly popular position in the world around it." About the Author
Kevin Reilly is a professor of humanities at Raritan Valley College and has taught at Rutgers, Columbia, and Princeton Universities. Cofounder and first president of the World History Association, Reilly has written numerous articles on the teaching of history, and has edited a number of works in world history including The Introductory History Course for the AHA and the World History syllabus collection. A specialist in immigration history, Reilly incorporated his research in creating the "Modern Global Migrations" globe at Ellis Island. His work on the history of racism led to the editing of Racism: A Global Reader. He was a Fulbright scholar in Brazil and Jordan and a�NEH fellow in Greece, Oxford UK, and India. Awards include the Community College Humanities Association’s Distinguished Educator of the Year and the World History Association's Pioneer Award. He has also served the American Historical Association in various capacities, including the governing Council. He is currently writing a global history of racism.

Required, but like it.

I had to get this book for a World Civ class in college. I ended up doing extra reading outside of what was assigned because I loved reading from the perspective of people who were there in that point in history.

Full of knowledge!

I needed this textbook for a World Civilizations class. For the most part, this book wasn't too bad. Kind of tough in a few spots but overall it was very informative. It gives you a lot of primary sources to read about different time periods in history. I like this type of book better than a traditional history book, because it allows you to see things from the point of view of people who were actually experiencing life during that particular period instead of feeding you the point of view and interpretations of a particular author. History can actually be pretty interesting when you're given the opportunity to interpret sources and draw your own conclusions. I actually would have liked to take part II of the class if I needed it, because this text helped me see history in a new way.

This book is not very user friendly. It is difficult to get into a "flow". Other than that complaint, I find that that the book is factual and has many 'original source' material included. However, I finally put the book down and read another World History book that was prevalent in universities in the 1990's. This was satisfactory for my quest of knowledge for the ancient history portion of the books.

Since the Iranian Revolution more than thirty years ago, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), also known as the Revolutionary Guard, has conducted covert and overt military operations, built an economic empire, and trained, financed, and guided terrorists to pursue one goal�the preservation and expansion of the Islamic revolution. About the Author
STEVEN O’HERN is a retired military counterintelligence officer, an Iraq War veteran, and an attorney. While serving in Iraq, Colonel O’Hern directed intelligence operations against the IRGC; that experience informed his first book, The Intelligence Wars: Lessons from Baghdad (Prometheus Books, 2008). He has taught at the Counter Threat Institute International, a California-based company that provides counterterrorism training to military personnel and law enforcement officers. He lives in Overland Park, Kansas.

A superb book on what is actually happening

This is an excellent book on an important subject. Colonel O'Hern has done his homework and has done it in the line of fire as well. He knows his subject matter very well, and his analysis is superb and to the point. O'Hern's prediction that the conflict with Iran is likely can not be overstated enough. His criticism of the MEK cult is on the mark, his analysis of the IRGC's network and agenda is truly remarkable. I do hope that the clueless members of the US congress (or I may add members of all western governments and parliaments across the Atlantic as well) are actually reading this serious book. The threat of the Iranian regime through its fanatical IRGC arm is serious, but no one has really paid much attention to it. Hopefully this book will open many eyes to the reality.

I am glad someone has written this book. Please grab this book, read it and spread the word on the menace that is the Iranian regime's revolutionary guards. 5/5

This book changed my life.

I did not understand the situation in the Middle East until I read this book. Now I see clearly the dire scenario that the world faces as Khomeinist Iran goes unchecked. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about America and the freedoms that we now have...freedoms that we may not have forever if Americans do not wake up. Thank you Mr. O'Hern for writing this book. I am now going to recommend it to everyone I know.

Superb, Concise Overview of the Iranian IRGC- Must Read!

Steven O’Hern’s second work, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, is a highly readable and concise overview of the Iranian IRGC. O’Hern presents an engaging book written for “citizens, military, law enforcement members, and others to become familiar with the Revolutionary Guard. Although full of details, it does not attempt the deep analysis of factions within the IRGC and the Islamic regime of Iran that is popular with the think tanks and academic writers.”

This is the strength of the book- it is a superb and well researched entry point for the citizen or policymaker to begin a more in depth and detailed understanding of the topic. O’Hern avoids the unhelpful and often misleading labels such as “reformist” or “hardliner” so often seen in think tank works and policy debates, and instead portrays the IRGC through a recounting of its own key statements and violent actions. One of the main and disturbing themes of the book is that the IRGC has a long history of successfully conducting violent attacks against US persons and interests with little US reaction. Beyond the terrorist attacks and potential for violence, O’Hern highlights the larger role of the IRGC in the Iranian economic, policy, and nuclear realm.

This book is a must read for those looking for background on the current headlines and those looking for a deeper understanding beyond the cable news sound bites.
