Very thorough account of those Spaniards who came after De Soto

Very enjoyable account of the last Spanish expeditions into the Catawba uplands connecting the fuller writings of De Soto's chroniclers with the most up-to-date research as to who was visited and at what locations at that time.

A good book. Well written. Easy to read.

A good account of a little-known Spanish expedition through the US Southeast.

Recommended for people who think de Soto was the only Spaniard to enter the interior of Dixie. You will learn something. Has several insights that help to understand just where de Soto really went and when, with excellent background on the people that he met.

Spanish and Indians in the Carolinas

Charles Hudson is perhaps the best scholar to read about the interaction of Indians and Spanish in the American Southeast during the 16th century. His book about De Soto's route is definitive. This book concerns the nearly-forgotten expeditions of Juan Pardo through the Carolinas and across the Appalachians to Tennessee in 1566,67,and 68. Included in the book are the official accounts in Spanish of Pardo's expeditions plus English translations.

Pardo visited several of the same Indian cities as De Soto had thirty years earlier and thus we have two sources regarding such places as Cofitachequi, Joara, and Coosa. When De Soto reached Cofitachequi -- few miles east of present-day Columbia, SC, it was aleady in decline, having suffered from a plague -- almost certainly of European origin. By Pardo's time, the powerful Chiefdom was on its last legs. Within a few years, the complex societies seen by the early Spanish would cease to exist to be replaced by the much depopulated and simpler societies of the historic Creek, Cherokee, Catawba and other Indian tribes.

Hudson pieces together linguistic and archaeological data as well as nuggets from the tiresome accounts of the expedition by Pardo's legalistic notary to portray the Indians Pardo met. One interesting feature of Pardo's expeditions compared with De Soto's is that Pardo had few battles or adventures, got along well with most of the Indians he met, and none of his men were killed or died.

There is little information about the Indians of the Southeast at the time of first contacts with the invading Europeans. Pardo's is one of the most useful and least fanciful accounts that we have and Hudson's interpretation of it is almost surely the best that can be found.

From the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright to the rock gardens of Zen Buddhism, Coleman explores applied, fine, and folk arts in order to uncover points of coalescence between art and religion. Drawing from six living faiths (Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Taoism), this book philosophically analyzes relations between art and religion in order to explain how the concepts "art," "beauty," "creativity," and "aesthetic experience" find their place or counterparts in religious discourse and experience. Coleman repeatedly shows that aesthetic ideas can serve as bridges to spiritual categories, as when he relates aesthetic bliss to "the peace that passes all understanding."

The author follows a three-fold approach; first, he examines ideas and motifs from religious classics in world literature, such as Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching and The Interior Castle by Teresa of Avila, in order to relate them to aesthetic phenomena. Second, he turns to the statements of artists, such as Leo Tolstoy, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Shih-t'ao, and Wassily Kandinsky, for themes and practices that have religious significance. Third, he analyzes and evaluates the writings of various theoreticians--philosophers, theologians, art critics, sociologists, and psychologists--on the relations between art and religion. Coleman demonstrates, for example, that Martin Buber's I-Thou relationship captures much that is central to art, creativity, and aesthetic experience as well as to religious life.

Among the themes that receive sustained treatment are: the varieties of union in art and religion, the child as a paradigm for artists and saints, and creativity as essential to religion. Finally, the author critically weighs proposed distinctions between art and religion and between the broader categories of the aesthetic and the spiritual, rejecting some and showing how others are compatible with his proposal that the aesthetic and the spiritual are cognate categories.

Articulate and Mind-Opening

I rented this book from my university's library, intrigued by the title. Being both a highly passionate artist and a deeply spiritual person, I was immediately interested. I have always suspected that there were relations between artistic and religious acts, and author Earle J. Coleman expands on this theory, with a lot of illuminating, penetrating insight. He discusses that both art and religion involve a communication and inspiration from a divine source (possibly the same source) and that all artists and theologists should strive to remain in touch with that divinity in many ways, such as expressing your inner child (in order to be open, faithful, and nonjudgmental), being a receptive vessel for inspiration and creative energy, and setting aside shallow ego desires in order to be fully immersed in the creative/spiritual process. Coleman states that while he does not believe that art and religion are completely intertwined, he believes that the two subjects intermingle in many ways like the creative art and fables found in religions and churches, and the transformative, cathartic power of creative work. Reading this article renewed my passion and faith in my craft, as well as the enigmatic Higher Power that works through me in order to express that craft.

Really It's 3 1/2 Stars

I was somewhat disappointed with "Giants Revisited" (though, considering my love of giants going back to the original game and the first time I played through those notorious giant adventures in the 1980s, Pathfinder & Co did have a lot to live up to). The product focuses on 10 "base" giant races and fleshes them out with sections on ecology, habitat and society, treasure, and campaign roles, spending about 4-5 pages on each giant race; in some cases, deities, mythology, and history, even campaign hooks, are also laid out. Overall, it's a decent book, especially for GMs who are looking to provide a little depth to giant-themed adventures.

Crunch: 2 new magic items and 5 new feats (of course, giant-specific feats). Not much there, for crunch. There are also randomized charts for giant's bags (if you don't like picking out every single item, like I do) and good stat blocks for "sample" giants--all of whom are more powerful, chieftan-type giants. I was disappointed in that I hoped for more magic, more feats, and perhaps even more items, all of which might have been leveled towards fighting the "littler races"--but this is not found in "Giants Revisited."

Nice fluff, but not much crunch.

If you like the "fluff" of the Pathfinder setting, this is a decent little background book. Gives you some excellent insight into how the various giant races operate, go about their daily doings, how they'd interact with a party in a campaign, that sort of thing. The best bits of course being the "Giant race X on Golarion" sections. Lots of nifty campaign/adventure ideas in there.

If you're looking for crunch, not much of that though. Other than examples of "boss" types for each giant race and some unique giant feats, you're pretty much just getting lots of background "fluff." Well written "fluff," but for those looking for more "crunch" I'd say you'll need to look elsewhere.

Wonderful Gaming Ideas on Every Page

If you ask me why I play Pathfinder, I will point to the Revisited series. I picked up Classic Monsters Revisited years ago and became enamored with the new take on monsters. Whereas a lot of book that tied into 3.5 D&D were heavy on the rules, this book was all about generating ideas and fleshing out a campaign setting. Even though the system has changed, Giants Revisited continues that tradition, focusing on the history, culture, and behaviors of the different giants out there and leaving most of the rules material for other books.

While recent Revisited books have had a lot of creatures with only animal level intelligence (such as Dungeon Denizens Revisited and Misfit Monsters Redeemed), this one is notable in that every species of giant is reasonably intelligent and has its own culture. You'll learn about frost giant jarls, about the magical creation of run giants, and much more. Every page has a lot of fascinating information on it, and I doubt you can get through a section without wanting to run a campaign that uses these giants.

There is some rules information here, such as a new feat here and there or a sample giant at the end of each chapter, but overall it's about generating story and ideas. I think this is hugely important to modern RPGs, as many people focus more on the rules than the cool and fascinated stuff that gets new people into the hobby. In that regard, this book hits it out of the park yet again, delivering another great addition to the Pathfinder line.

A good primer for legal writing

I am in a program that will lead me to a MJ in healthcare law. For someone who comes from the healthcare industry the format for legal writing is different. In healthcare we become very good at organizing our notes according to review of systems and sorting out objective and subjective information. The same sort of holds true for legal writing. There are formats. Not everything is important and yet it is important to know what is important. The book gives a good foundation of the different types of law and then goes over how to glean the important information to put in a brief, memorandum, or other documents. I like how it uses actual cases for examples and often will ask the reader to select example A, B or C as the best one. The author then gives the answer as to why one was better than the others. Anyway, in the class I am taking we also read from other authors but this is the primary one and all of them basically say the same thing.

Sakai's rabbit samurai Usagi Yojimbo has been around since 1984, and this latest collection of the ongoing comic makes it easy to understand the character's longevity. Sakai has the ability to make stories instantly and universally accessible. Although the cartoony b&w art and the gimmick anthropomorphic animal warriors adventuring in the legendary past of 17th-century Japan would seem to be a set-up for saccharine or simplistic stories, the series has a grim edge. Death is always a possibility for Usagi. In the opening story, "Showdown," he and his rhinoceros bounty hunter friend Gen arrive in a town where two rival gangs are terrorizing the townsfolk. Of course, the pair sets out to fix things, in a sting that finds them playing each side against the other. Usagi is brave but hardly infallible even though they defeat both bosses, Usagi and Gen end up as penniless as they started out. In "The Shrouded Moon," Usagi and Gen set out to aid a beautiful thief, a fox named Kitsune, in a dangerous mission. Despite the fantasy setting, the feudal world is scrupulously researched. Sakai's blending of words and pictures is utterly assured, and he uses his fun style to great effect. Like the best animated characters, Usagi and the rest of the cast is capable of a broad range of emotions. Blending classic storytelling, flawlessly designed art and lovingly researched period touches, Usagi Yojimbo is a true all-ages comics treat.

Adult/High School-Moon continues the adventures of the rabbit samurai and his belligerent friend Gen after they helped return the sacred sword Grasscutter to Atsuta Shrine in Grasscutter II (Dark Horse, 2002). In "Showdown," Usagi and Gen free a town from two rival gangs. In "The Shrouded Moon," they assist Kitsune, an entertainer and pickpocket who was hired to steal the good-luck talisman of a powerful gang leader. "Seasons" views Usagi through the eyes of a man he was hired to protect, a fishmonger he defended, and a would-be bandit scared onto the right path. The other two stories focus on two of the women in the series, Kitsune and Chizu. Sakai has created a unique world, based on the culture and history of Japan under shoguns, but visually filled with anthropomorphic animals of many types. His stories are well plotted and beautifully drawn. Usagi uses his brain as well as his sword to solve problems, and he is an honorable, admirable character. Grumpy, greedy Gen makes for good comic relief. This title stands on its own, but readers will probably want more in the series.

good follow up to Grasscutter II

Having come of the high of Grasscutter and Grasscutter II, it's time for the readers and Usagi to go on some slightly lighter adventures.

When read on it's own this book might seam like a low point in the series but that's simply not true. If you look at it as a whole, it flows perfectly with the books that came before it and does a good job setting up future important events.

You get more insight into the Neko Ninja clan and Usagi's thief friend Kitsune. There is also a light fun story with Usagi and Gen. If you're new to the series i wouldn't start with this book but it is on par with the rest of the books in the series.

Describes how to develop general-purpose computer programs for studying the dynamics of multibody systems. This is the only text/reference on the topic that provides complete and systematic treatment and general techniques for the kinematic and dynamic analysis of multibody systems consisting of rigid and deformable bodies. Explains not only how to minimize stresses in such systems, but also how to develop and use computational algorithms for the dynamic analysis of deformable bodies in multibody systems. Contains end-of-chapter problems.

About the Author
Ahmed Shabana was named the Richard and Loan Hill Professor in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Illinois at Chicago's College of Engineering. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1982 and worked as a postdoctoral Fellow there before joining UIC in Fall 1983. He is internationally known for his research contributions in the areas of large-scale computations as applied to dynamic and multibody systems such as vehicles, machines, and robots. Professor Shabana is the author of four books and has published more than 260 papers including 130 journal papers and 130 conference papers, presentations, and technical reports. He has maintained, over the years, a steady stream of research funding (a total of $3.5 million) from the Federal Railroad Administration, Army Research Office and National Science Foundation, as well as other agencies and companies. In addition, Professor Shabana has supervised the work of 31 Ph.D. students, 30 MS students and 26 visiting scholars and postdoctoral Fellows. He has served on the editorial board of several journals, and he is the Founding Chair of the ASME Technical Committee on Multi-Body Systems and Nonlinear Dynamics. He has also served as a member of several national and international committees. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Professor Shabana received several awards, which include an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Lappeenranta University of Technology (Finland), the Fulbright Research Scholar Award, and the Humboldt Prize.

Classic Book on Multibody Dynamics

This is a well written work with a minimum of "it is left up to the student to prove" or "It is easily verified". The author proceeds from rigid body nomenclature and the non-linear effects of multibody motion, thru a brief overview of elasticity as related to multi-body dynamics and applies both to a good understanding of flexible multi-body dynamics. This is truly a classic work and it is very unfortunate that it is out of print. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a firm foundation in the mathematics of multi-body dynamics.

The past and the future

In my thesis I used multibody approach to describe a railway wheelset motion in the three dimensional space; many of the lectures I had where based on Shabana's work and I found them very useful. Actually I'm involved in developing fast small mechanism (to be used on electrical circuit breakers) and I need to go further in knowing how to manage system dynamics through multibody systems; the main reason why I decided to buy this book is that I'd like to better understand some of the aspects that during my studies I had to get 'as they are' and this book seems to answer my questions
