Commendable and improved
By Will Jerom
Fisher has certainly improved and expanded upon her "Living Religions" book. It has become standard fare at universities for world religion, and its reputation for its thorough, well-developed chapters is well-deserved. Students should be served well by this textbook in world-religion classes. I would give it 5 stars, except for a few reservations. Gandhi is given short shrift here, and is a fairly major Hindu figure. He appears in bits and scattered pieces. The chapter on indigenous religions I have always found to be a bit wandering and rambling, and still find this to be the case. Overall the book is intensely comprehensive, but perhaps too long. These are not major flaws, however, as I still find this a very commendable work on world religions.

Excellent textbook and you learn a lot about religion.
By M. Osborne
I had to get this textbook for a class I was taking and I really enjoyed reading it. It wasn't very detailed on the Christianity chapter but the other chapters (Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism and others) where very easy to follow and you wanted to keep reading and find out about the other religious beliefs and cultures. I am very happy that my instructor chose this book to help us learn about different religions.

Interesting beginning-level text
By Pansy lynn
While this is a reasonable book for an introduction to world religions, I found that it goes too deep on some subjects, and not deep enough on others. For example, in the Christianity section, you will learn a lot about Roman Catholicism, but so much about Protestantism. Indigenous religions may have been better served by concentrating more in depth on a few sample religions, to give the flavor of the many varied beliefs, rather than trying to include such a variety of information that the chapter felt rambling and disjointed. One very good thing about the book is that it tries to present the positive side od allv religions, while not denying that their is also a not-so-positive side to most.

Review
"This third edition of Johnson's interpretive introduction to the writings of the New Testament is an excellent vade mecum for all readers of that Testament - for general readers, college students, and teachers of biblical studies." --Joseph A. Fitzmyer, Professor Emeritus, Biblical Studies, Catholic University of America

A Refreshing and Helpful Interpretation
By M. Tapie
What many of the reviews on this page seem to miss is that this work by LTJ seeks to acheive "interpretation" of the text rather than the common historical-critical approach. He does treat some of the history and critical issues throughout, mostly he does this in the beginning. However, historical-critical is not his concern. Johnson effectively unfolds, in a very helpful and introductory way, the theological flow and cohesiveness of the New Testament. If you are looking for a commentary or a historical critical treatment of the text this is not your book. If you are looking for an introduction to the theological themes and structure of the New Testament that is thoroughly aware of the difficulties and limitations of the historical-critical approach yet still utilizes the method in reasonable ways this book is for you.

A "reader friendly" commentary on the New Testament text
By Midwest Book Review
The Writings Of The New Testament: An Interpretation By Luke Timothy Johnson (Robert W. Woodruff Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins, Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia) is an erudite, scholarly, yet thoroughly "reader friendly" commentary on the New Testament text, in relation to history of the ancient world, Christian beliefs, and a page-by-page analysis of the scripture itself. An accompanying CD-ROM provides ready access to cross-referenced text. The Writings Of The New Testament is highly recommended as an exhaustive study enhanced with extensive bibliographical annotation and thought-provoking questions.

Great Reference - go back again and again
By Jeffrey Thiemann
I bought this for a course on the Gospels and have gone back to this book every time I go to study another part of the New Testament. Johnson covers the NT extremely well and gives insights into the text and the context that is helpful to students, preachers and teachers. This updated version includes significant current NT scholarship. It is very well written, making the reading enjoyable.

One of the best IPE textbooks on the market
By Christopher LaMonica
Have assigned this text in courses on IPE for years now, through several editions. This edition is a vast improvement over the 5th edition in many ways: more concise, remarkably up to date, and with a proper balance of theoretical approaches (Realism, Liberalism, Historical Materialism and several others: constructivism, feminism, neo-Gramscianism) and IPE topics, e.g. money, trade, regionalism, MNCs, debt. Each chapter has a number of bolded terms for students to consider and clever chapter questions. The historical survey of the Bretton Woods Institutions at the start of the book is excellent. Only critique that I have is that Chapter One could have a clearer discussion of State vs. Market goals and the notion of "efficiency" - the efficient allocation of scarce resources - that is something that inevitably comes up in discussions of economic liberalism. I also think that Cohn might want to take a closer look at the growing challenges to, and hopeful reforms of, the Bretton Woods Institutions. All said, glad to be using this textbook again. I recommend it highly to students and instructors.
Bravo Theodore Cohn!

Only half a book
By A Customer
I already have George's CR 8.5 book and I think its great. When I saw the description for this book I was very interested in reading it. Unfortunately, once I got the book in my hands I was let down.
As I went through the chapters I saw that it was really a "Tips and Tricks" book. This is mostly stuff that I already read in his 8.5 book. So I didn't see much new information. But the really bad part was when I got to page 200. The book was over! Yes, this "400" page book is only 200 pages.
The last 200 pages are a printout of the Crystal help file. I've read books that have what I consider too many tables copied out of a help file. But this book goes over the top by having a full 50% of its content being a copy of the help file. What was George and his publisher thinking? It reminds me of the Tom Petty song The Last DJ, "The guys at the top want to see how much you'll pay for what you used to get for free."
In summary, the first half of the book is a lot of repeated tips from his 8.5 book. The second half of the book is worthless. If you want a good CR book, get George's 8.5 or 9.0 book and pass this one by. I'm shocked to see that a great CR author such as George put with his name on the cover.

Crystal Guru in a Book
By Marie A. Harper
If you're just getting started with Crystal Reports, you've had some introductory training and know your way around the basics fairly well, but you're just not sure if some particular thing is possible or how to do it, this is the book for you. (Even if you are not just getting started!) Some of us are lucky and have a Crystal guru in the cubicle next door for those one-off questions; the rest can look them up in this book.
The first half of the book is tips and tricks, some more tricky than others, but all in the realm of good-to-know. I consider myself a sophisticated Crystal Reports developer and yet I found tidbits of knowledge that I had never come across before. The topics covered are broad, encompassing report formatting, formula creation, grouping enhancements, and more. Putting just some of the tips into practice will make you look like the guru.
The second half of the book is a Crystal Reports formula reference that I did not find much more helpful than the Crystal Reports help files. However, the tips section is more than worth the price of the book!

Good tips - but lots of repetition
By Clark B. Timmins
The author of this book is also the author of the various editions of the standard 'Crystal Reports: The Complete Guide' book. This book tries to pick up where that book left off--in other words, this book tries to be a resource for intermediate to advanced users.

The book does present numerous interesting tips and a few really useful strategies for report development. However, the examples are not particularly thorough and there simply are not enough of them to really cover the breadth of the product. If used as an "idea-generator" book for a mid-level developer it would be useful, but it is not a comprehensive guide to advanced techniques.

As other reviewers have already mentioned, about half of the book is just reprinted information from the electronic help files that are included with Crystal Reports. Of course having them nicely organized and bound in printed form is very useful--but the book is pretty pricey for a simple reference manual.

I read and enjoyed the book, I learned a few things and it gave me some ideas, but in general it was a bit dissappointing. If work's buying it for you--great! If it's your own money--well, you might wish you hadn't spent it.

Asian America: Sociological and Interdisciplinary Perspectives, by Pawan Dhingra, Robyn Magalit Rodriguez

Asian Americans are the fastest growing minority population in the country. Moreover, they provide a wonderful lens on the experiences of immigrants and minorities in the United States more generally, both historically and today. In this timely new text, Pawan Dhingra and Robyn Magalit Rodriguez critically examine key sociological topics through the experiences of Asian Americans, including social hierarchies (of race, gender, and sexuality), work, education, family, culture, identity, media, pan-ethnicity, social movements, and politics.

With vivid examples and lucid discussion of a broad range of theories, the authors demonstrate the contributions of the discipline of sociology to understanding Asian Americans, and vice versa. In addition, this text takes students beyond the boundaries of the United States to cultivate a comparative and global understanding of the Asian experience, as it has become increasingly transnational and diasporic.

Bridging sociology and the growing interdisciplinary field of Asian American studies, and uniquely placing them in dialogue with one another, this engaging text will be welcome in undergraduate and graduate sociology courses such as race and ethnic relations, immigration, and social stratification, as well as on ethnic studies courses more broadly.

Review

"[Dhingra & Rodriguez] succinctly but compellingly present arguments and evidence from different sociological and interdisciplinary approaches, from assimilationist perspectives to critical race theory. The result is an accessible volume that will be a welcome addition to the bookshelves of many social scientists and ethnic studies scholars, as well as their students."
Ethnic and Racial Studies

"Pawan Dhingra and Robyn Rodriguez, both distinguished scholars with great experience on the subject, offer a highly readable book which explores much more than the content suggested in its title."
LSE Review of Books

''Dhingra and Rodriguez provide a new overview on the diversity of Asian American communities in the 21st century. Drawing on racial formation theory and critical race theory throughout the book, Asian America: Sociological and Interdisciplinary Perspectives reinterprets such key issues as immigrants' rights, labor, education, family, and popular culture in new, exciting, and accessible terms. Their approaches to race/class/gender intersectionality in the Asian American context, and their deconstruction of "model minority" stereotyping, are particularly valuable. Highly recommended for course adoption!''
Howard Winant, University of California Santa Barbara

"Dhingra and Rodriguez are well-established scholars whose partnership has provided one of the best overviews on Asian Americans and race that I have read in recent years. With insightful analysis, clear writing, and incorporating an impressive range of material, this is an outstanding book.''
Leland Saito, University of Southern California

''A splendid, much-needed text, Asian America: Sociological and Interdisciplinary Perspectives reveals how the social sciences inform some of the key concepts and debates in Asian American and ethnic studies. Required reading for scholars and students alike.''
Gary Y. Okihiro, Columbia University

Solid textbook for use in Asian American courses and studies, whether used as a required textbook or as supplemental reading.
By Kcorn
This textbook is worthy of consideration for graduate and undergraduate students who are taking sociology courses in Asian American studies. Many of the chapters can also be read as supplemental material for classes in race and ethnic relations or ethnic studies - as well as a number of related courses.

Authors Pawan Dhingra and Robyn Magalit Rodgriguez have clearly conducted extensive research and their deconstruction of select racial stereotypes provides a basis for comparing and contrasting other viewpoints in the field. There is a wealth of information on Asian American identity, history, family and work lives, education, portrayals in media and popular culture and more. A segment of one of the more fascinating sections focuses on levels of poverty in various Asian American groups and much of that information surprised me.

I approached this book without an extensive background or knowledge of Asian American culture, history, or major issues. So I found the material especially informative and enlightening. It is well organized and each chapter concludes with discussion questions - and often suggested supplementary material for further study, revealing the diversity of Asian American communities (with a focus on racial formation theory).

While it is obviously impossible to provide a detailed list of all the topics in this comprehensive textbook, some issues covered include: the difference in median earnings of Asian Americans across ethnic groups, sociological approaches to immigration and migration policies for Asian Americans entering the United States, co-ethnic marriages, transracial adoption, how Asian Americans become citizens while also maintaining their ethnic culture and more.

In addition to the discussion questions, there are extensive notes on each chapter as well as references in the end sections of the textbook.

Great contribution to the field
By Benjamin
This book constitutes a great contribution to the field of sociological studies about different aspects related to immigration in the U.S. I do myself deal with these concepts in my profession, and I was delighted with the level of scholarship put into this book. The research background is evident, and the findings often times eye-opening. When approaching such a delicate issue as immigration in the U.S. (I am still not sure why I just used the world 'delicate'), one must remember the three ways one can be American in the U.S.: those who colonized the land, by coercion (Native-Americans, African-Americans, Mexican who were already here before their lands became part of U.S. territory...), and finally, by immigration. So, well, yes, it is not actually true that everybody here is an immigrant, but if you look at that, kind of everyone is except for the Native American and other tribes from Mexico. When folks argue against immigrant, they probably forget they must have been immigrant themselves. And in the 21st century, those who are louder agains recent immigration are, in fact, those who came 100 years ago through Ellis Island. Those White Europeans (Dutch, irish, Greek, Polish, Italian, or anything else) are now mainstream American. And they protest against recent immigrants, who happen to be Latinos and Asians.
The same animosity Asians and Latinos are facing today, they faced 100 years ago. Just read the history behind Ellis Island. Italians and Polish were discriminated against because they were Catholics, Greeks were discriminated against because their religion did not conform to the Protestantism of the North, and like the Italians, their skin was dark. Jewish from Russia and East Europe were also discriminated against, and the list goes on. None of them (except the Irish, who by the way were also Catholics, not Protestants) spoke English. And yet, they were assimilated and, again, they are now mainstream America.
In this context one must read this volume by Dhingra and Magalit Rodriguez (I'd adventure to say the first is of Asian descent, the second of Latino descent). The book beautifully puts together the whole picture when it comes to Asian Americans: questions about race, ethnicity, gender and even sexuality are discussed. Their history of arrival, along with topics related to class, education, and family relations are further discussed as well. A chapter is devoted to their identity. You know: what are you? This funny question we are sooner or later all asked (all of us who look like we don't 'belong' here...). The book finishes with discussions on inter-minority relations and social movements and politics regarding Asians.
This book does not seem to leave any topic behind, and breaks down some of the myths related to Asians. You may have heard some of them, and as myths, they must be debunked. This books does a great job in doing that, and much more. A must read for those who are interested in the dialogue among diverse ethnic groups in America, a society that is torn between assimilation, acculturation, cultural pluralism, and I will add, plain and simple bigotry. Five stars, highly recommended.

well-written, but focuses on privilege and bias mostly
By S.E. Poza
As someone who lived in Japan for 23 years and currently resides in one of the most ethnically diverse areas of the United States (with a large Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, and Indian population), I was interested in this book as a means of bridging the gap in my understanding of Asians in their home countries and Asians in America. What I was hoping for was something which informed me on the unique identities and lifestyles of people of Asian descent who were born in or immigrated to the U.S. What this is is largely a discussion of how oppressive certain dominant aspects of American culture are for Asian Americans. I was very disappointed in how little descriptive information there is of their identities and lifestyles. This is mainly about challenges and discrimination. While important aspects, it seems that there is a distinct bias and that the book is oriented mostly toward discussing heteronormative, male, and white privilege.

An example of this is in the chapter which includes information on gender and sexuality. When I lived in Japan, I learned that their culture was generally more rigid in regards to roles than American society (and homosexuality was something most people there believed the West "taught" the Japanese, not something that was part of the normal continuum of sexual behavior). There was no discussion in this chapter of Asian cultural norms across the spectrum of those who identify as Asian. It was all about Western stereotypes of Asians in regards to sexuality (the passive, neutered Asian male, the dragon lady, etc.). I came away knowing nothing more about gender roles or sexuality within Asian-American families though first-hand experience with people I've known would lead me to believe that there is generally a tendency toward more traditional gender roles within such families. Unfortunately, I would prefer to have more than my anecdotal experiences to draw on. This book didn't give me more objective statistics or information.

If you are looking for a book that is largely focused on privilege and discrimination and how they affect Asian Americans, this is an extremely well-written textbook. It does provide enlightening information on certain corners of that issue and it is not entirely focused on that point. It's very readable by those with a college-level education (words like "phenotype" are used, which I learned when I studied psychology in university, but it's clearly not a common word). I felt that some parts of the book really had less to do with Asian Americans and more to do with being a minority in America. Indeed, content in the beginning focuses on African Americans. If you're looking for something more objective and descriptive of the lives of Asian Americans in accord with the cultural norms that they live with based on their heritage, then this isn't the book for you. I still found it of value as it encouraged me to look into some of the referenced research and dig even deeper into the history of "privilege" in America, but ultimately was disappointed with the focus.

The Provisional Irish Republican Army and the Morality of Terrorism, by Timothy Shanahan

Is terrorism ever morally justified? How should historical and cultural factors be taken into account in judging the morality of terrorist acts? What are the ethical limits of state counter-terrorism?For three decades the Provisional Irish Republican Army waged an 'armed struggle' against what it considered to be the British occupation of Northern Ireland. To its supporters, the IRA was the legitimate army of Ireland, fighting to force a British withdrawal as a prelude to the re-unification of the Irish nation. To its enemies, the IRA was an illegal, fanatical, terrorist organization whose members were criminals willing to sacrifice innocent lives in pursuit of its ideological obsession. At the centre of the conflict were the then unconventional tactics employed by the IRA, including sectarian killings, political assassinations, and bombings that devastated urban centres - tactics that have become increasingly commonplace in the post-9/11 world. This book is the first detailed philosophical examination of the morality of the IRA's violent campaign, and of the British government's attempts to end it. Written in clear, accessible prose, it is essential reading for anyone wishing to acquire a deeper understanding of one of the paradigmatic conflicts of the late 20th century.

An interesting read on the IRA and its use of terror
By Jack Stone
This academic work is not recommended for a first time reader who is now just diving into the complex world that is The Troubles of Northern Ireland. Only someone who is a seasoned student of the conflict can appreciate the nuanced arguments presented by Shanahan. Having said this, this work offers a unique contribution to the subject.

I did not give this work 5 stars as it is presented in a dry, academic style; it is painful reading and is intended for other academics (seeing as how the author is a professor, with a PhD in philosophy, this is to be expected). Also, the author's attempts to cast the IRA's use of terror as immoral is ineffective. This is not to say that the IRA's use of terror is justified - even they would admit it was largely ineffective and turned much of world opinion against them. But, the author picks apart elements of the IRA's publicly stated goals but intentionally glosses over the main cause of the conflict - British occupation of Ireland - and the fact that pro-British Loyalist paramilitaries were the most prolific sectarian terrorists in Northern Ireland. These ommissions defy historical fact and undermine the author's argument.

IRA supporters will not agree with this work as it assaults the underpinnings of Republicanism and thus the IRA and their methods. I do not agree with some of the author's assertions like his argument that the Irish as a people have no inherent right to self-determination (and thus neither do any of the other nations that make up the world community I would suppose?) Much of the author's effort is spent arguing for or against the views of other philosophers and moral academics in the field, which does not add much to the discussion about the IRA - the exact area which I was interested in.

This is a thought provoking read for any serious student of The Troubles who wants to delve into a very specific area of the conflict. However a graduate student in moral philosphy will probably have more interest in this book than a true student of The Troubles.

The Next Christendom: The Coming of Global Christianity, by Philip Jenkins

The first edition of The Next Christendom has been hailed as a landmark in our understanding of modern Christianity. In this new and substantially expanded second edition, Jenkins continues to illuminate the remarkable expanion of Christianity in the global South--in Africa, Asia, and Latin America--as well as the clash betwen Islam and Christianity since September 11. Among the major topics covered are the growing schism between Northern and Southern churches over issues of gender and sexuality, immigrant and ethnic churches in North America, and a special section on the split within the Anglican Communion. The first in a three-book trilogy on the changes besetting modern Christianity, this award-winning book will be welcomed by all of those who have come to recognize Philip Jenkins as one of our leading commentators on religion and world affairs.

From Library Journal
Jenkins (history and religious studies, Pennsylvania State Univ.) believes that we are on the verge of a transformational religious shift. As he explains it, Christianity, the religion of the West, is rapidly expanding south into Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and he predicts that by the year 2050, only about one-fifth of the world's three billion Christians will be non-Hispanic Caucasian. By numbers alone, they will be able to overwhelm the present political secular nation- and city-states and replace them with theocracies, similar to the Islamic Arab nations. He ends with a warning: with the rise of Islam and Christianity in the heavily populated areas of the Southern Hemisphere, we could see a wave of religious struggles, a new age of Christian crusades and Muslim jihads. These dire prognostications could be seen as just another rant from a xenophobic pseudo-prophet; however, the author is a noted historian, and his statements are well formed, well supported by empirical evidence, and compellingly argued. The only criticism is the brevity of the book. One hopes that The Next Christendom is only an introduction to a deeper analysis of a fascinating topic. Recommended for all libraries. From Booklist
*Starred Review* Fear of Islam is peaking, fueled by reports that the religion is burgeoning in numbers as well as militancy. Jenkins grants that Islam is indeed booming but marshals the evidence that today's largest religion, Christianity, will grow exponentially, too, and will remain the faith of the largest proportion of humanity. But the Christianity of 2050 will be very different from that molded by the 1,300 years during which Christianity was the faith of a rapidly developing Europe. The new Christianity will be liturgically anarchistic compared with the staid services of white, upper-middle-class people today. It will be overwhelmingly the faith of poor nonwhites living south of Europe, the U.S., and present-day Russia, and it won't reflect the values of the wealthy global north. It will revive Christianity's root emphases on healing and prophecy because its adherents will resemble the poor and oppressed who first embraced the redemption, the healing, and the blessing that Jesus promised. As he makes his case, Jenkins dispels some fashionable myths about historic Christianity; about historic Christian-Islamic relations; and about the nature of presumably pacific Hinduism when it is politicized. He also speculates trenchantly on how the problems of the Islamic and Christian global south will affect the global north, requiring genuine charity of the rich and genuine discernment of their leaders. A book everyone concerned about humanity's immediate future ought to read. Ray Olson

This is a landmark book. Baptist Times [an] important book... sober, scholarly analysis... Jenkins has such an acute eye for what is happening that the senario he depicts must be taken very seriously indeed. John Pridmore, The Tablet

a world far different from the one we thought we knew
By David A. Baer
In a memorable passage from the movie APOLLO THIRTEEN, a military man in the tense Houston control room shares with a political figure his premonition that the tragedy unfolding before them will be *the* catastrophic moment for the space program. Mission control flight chief Gene Kranz overhears their conversation and addresses it: 'With all due respect, gentleman, I believe this will be our finest hour.' The scene could stand in for the hand-wringing that often accompanies the apparent demise of the Western church when it comes to prognosticating on its fate over against the perceived adversaries of secularism and post-modernism. Philip Jenkins reminds us that, when viewed through a wide-screen lens, the immediacy of threat often yields to a broad panorama of opportunity.

Over against the fear of resurgent religion that shows its face among our cultural elites, Philip Jenkins sketches the rise of 'global Christianity' in predominantly positive terms. The Penn State University scholar of religion has noticed long before most of us that the face of Christendom is already brown, southern, and confident. He helps us to work through the implications of this even as he persuades us that the hegemony of Euro-American Christianity is a thing of the past and that-unless we pay attention-we who are part of it are likely to be, as the old song says, the last to know.

In the first of ten compact chapters ('The Christian Revolution', pp. 1-14), Jenkins starts out with a bang. Professional analysts of global trends have missed out on perhaps the biggest one, a fact that the title of Jenkins' opening chapter provocatively suggests. Religious revolutions are not, as Western intellectuals too often suppose, mere matters of the heart. They bring with them profoundly this-worldly repercussions like crusades, wars, and what Samuel Huntington has famously termed 'the clash of civilizations'. They can also renew societies. Jenkins informs us that a 'Christian revolution' is already underway in the developing world, one that our political leaders ignore to the peril of all of us.

The historian who can write well-researched prose for a popular readership and manage to turn large assumptions on their head is a valuable person indeed. Jenkins accomplishes just this in his second chapter ('Disciples of All Nations' pp. 15-38). He helps us to see that Christianity is not best understood as a western religion. Its African, Middle Eastern, and Asian successes were large and entrenched centuries before it came to be perceived by some as the faith of white men. Even popular myth of Christian crusades dispossessing Muslims of their ancestral turf is misleading in the extreme when viewed against the historical facts of Islamic expansionism and enduring Christian communities among those peoples whom we today identify reflexively as Muslim. Europe entered late into this story. Jenkins wonders, with one of his sources, whether the universal Christianity he describes is not best seen as the 'renewal of a non-western religion', a suggestion that gains credence when one ponders how alien Western skepticism immediately appears when placed beside the biblical documents, on the one hand, and ancient or emerging Christian movements from Africa or Asia, on the other.

If Western mythology about the missionary enterprise(s) is to be believed, it is the power of kings, companies, and missionaries that enforced a European Christian faith upon the reluctant peoples of the Two-Thirds World. Jenkins does not believe it, however, arguing that even when these institutions are given their due, Christianity has become an indigenous brushfire in many of the regions under review ('Missionaries and Prophets', pp. 39-53). Indeed, Christian faith of one variety or another-and sometimes several at once-appears to have thrived since the retreat of colonial powers. A guilty missionary conscience would appear to be a neurosis suffered largely in the West.

When the demise of European empires brought forward the moment for non-Western churches to stand alone, they had little trouble doing so (Ch. 3, 'Standing Alone, pp. 55-78). Indeed, the European retraction coincided with several significant Christian advances that affected both the European-founded churches and newer autochthonous movements. Academic interest in the latter often overshadows the at least as remarkable health of Roman Catholic, Anglican, and other traditional churches. Jenkins observes parallels between the developments he surveys in the 'South' and those that characterized a similar time of awakening, urbanization, and religious effervescence in the industrializing North.

Jenkins' fifth chapter ('The Rise of the New Christianity', pp. 79-105) produces some plausible and startling speculations based upon demographic trends extrapolated out from evidence that is available today. Population growth and contraction look poised to reduce European populations radically while a boom in many southern states continues apace. When turning to religious indicators, all of them suggest that the surge in southern Christianity has barely begun. The picture becomes even more interestingly when population mobility is factored into the equation. Immigration to Europe may well establish a renewed Christian presence on that continent. America looks set to become even more of a Christian nation than it is today, again due to immigration.

In 'Coming to Terms' (ch. 6, pp. 107-139), Jenkins surveys how churches in the Two-Thirds world `inculturate' the gospel in their cultural contexts. Though the results are sometimes alarming to Western Christians, Jenkins' view is rather more sanguine, claiming that most of these adaptations are well within the parameters of recognizably Christian faith. As demographic changes favor the Southern churches, their patterns of life and worship-often viscerally supernatural in their orientation-are bound to become the dominant ones in a new Christendom.

Jenkins' seventh chapter prognosticates about the varying models of church and state that can be expected as important southern countries become demographically Christian ('God and the World', pp. 141-162). The predictions are not all reassuring to heirs of a strong tradition of separation between the two. Even more unsettling is the possibility of a secular north looking down its nose at-and perhaps coming to blows with-a fervently religious south. In the limited but important realm of ecclesiastical politics, events since the 2002 publication of the book make Jenkins look prescient, a virtue he takes scholarly care to disown. Developments in the American political landscape make one wonder whether this country might become divided in two along the same lines rather than ease into alignment with its secular northern compeers. The sight of sophisticated American Episcopalians separating from local oversight, calling themselves 'Anglicans', and placing themselves under the pastoral care of African bishops may be the robin that calls this particular Spring.

Jenkins' book is highly quotable and for this reason often brandished as a triumphalist Christian tract. That this is a misreading of his work is nowhere more obvious than in his prediction of continued and severe Muslim-Christian conflict ('The Next Crusade', 163-190) in those regions where both Islam and Christianity are experiencing a resurgence. Jenkins acknowledges that a world in which powerful adversaries take religion far more seriously than does today's sophisticated North should keep strategic planners up at night. Simple parents imagining the world in which their children will come of age might also join this insomniac corps.

What effect will southern Christianity have on northern churches and culture? This is Jenkins' question in 'Coming Home' (pp. 191-209). Events since the late 90s have given the author some hard facts to work with. The southern churches are almost all theologically and culturally more conservative than their northern partners. But are they so distinct so as to be incapable of re-evangelizing secularized Europe and the USA? Maybe not. Stay tuned.

Jenkins takes up his final opportunity ('Seeing Christianity Again for the First Time', pp. 211-220) in the first person plural, for the first time plainly identifying himself as a Christian social scientist who cares deeply about the 'we' of Christian faith. Dispassionate analysis is exchanged for what becomes almost an indictment of northern Christian myopia. From the angle which Jenkins permits us to view the world of, say 2050 A.D., the persecution and poverty of which so much are made in the New Testament literature is also the context of the majority of today's Christians (not to mention those who await their moment a half-century hence).

As a Christian reviewer whose work takes him to those corners of the world (or are they its centers?) that Jenkins surveys, I find in Jenkins' work the ring of truth. Many Christians exult in the statistics of Christian resurgence that crowd the pages of this book and allow its title to sound something other than arrogant. In my judgment, they have misread Jenkins. There is more challenge here than pom-poms for waving by those of us whose historical circumstances make it comfortable to cheer on impoverished brethren who remain-by and large-at a safe distance.

This is not an optimistic book, though it is profoundly hopeful. It is perhaps among the two or three that Western Christians ought first to read in this decade, as we hope for a revision of this fine work in the next. We live on the cusp of extraordinary Christian advance, indeed it is already upon us. In the light of these demographic trends, however, the ancient voice of Tertullian sounds ever more pertinent to the world that is already taking shape, a world that Jenkins urges us to see from an entirely fresh angle. 'The blood of the martyrs', that church father still soberly reminds us, 'is the seed of the church.'

A (perhaps unintended) endictment of "northern" Christianity
By Kerry Walters
Jenkins's *The New Christendom* is an incredibly thought-provoking estimate of the new faces Christianity will wear in the next half century. Given that population and religious enthusiasm is waning in the northern hemisphere, and just the opposite is going on in the southern one, Jenkins predicts that Christianity's center of gravity will migrate to Africa and Central and South America in the immediate decades ahead. This will result in the emergence of new symbols, new styles of worship, new metaphors, and new ethical sensibilities, all of which mean that Christianity will no longer be dominated by an Eurocentric history and ethos.
Because southern Christianity will become increasingly pentecostal, evengelical, and politically and morally conservative, northern sensibilities, which already tend to take the Christian message with an urbane grain of salt, are likely to dismiss Christianity even more. It will be dismissed as "jungle religion," (p. 169) contrary to both enlightened and postmodern ways of viewing the world. Thus the north will find pseudo-legitimation for its steady move toward secularism in religious revival of the south.
In defending this thesis, Jenkins indirectly raises serious concerns about the spiritual health of North American and European Christianity. If his predictions are in any way true--and they certainly have the ring of plausibility--then it follows that mainstream institutional Christianity, Catholic and Protestant alike, needs to reflect seriously on both its style and convictions. If it's become so indifferent to its own message that it finds enthusiastic support of that message distasteful, things have reached a sorry state. In predicting the rise of a "southern" Christendom, then, Jenkins has done more than suggested a demographic migration. He's also implicitly invited "northern" Christians to take a hard look at themselves and their beliefs, and ultimately to cut bait or fish.
Jenkins is a good writer with a fluid and lively style. The first four chapters, in which he makes the statistical and demographic case for his predictions, are nonetheless rather slow-going. Readers with no head (or patience) for statistical tables might wish to read the first two chapters and then skip immediately to Chapter 5.

Death of Christianity? Think again.
By A Customer
If you are interested in the future of religion in general and Christianity in particular, the one must read book this year has been written by Phil Jenkins.
A respected professor at Penn State University who has been known for "going against the flow," Jenkins argues that the rapid growth of primitive/Pentecostal Christianity around the world (both within and alongside existing traditions) will literally reshape the world, with possible religious conflict affecting everything from historic European denominations (already happening in Anglicanism) to geopolitics.
In a post-modern world, religion returns to center stage, and Jenkins has already turned on the spotlight. This is a must-read for all futurists--including the armchair variety such as myself. After reading Jenkins' seemingly airtight (even understated) analysis, it is difficult to give credence to any author suggesting the passing of Christianity. For every empty cathedral in Europe, there is a burgeoning congregation in Africa or Latin America. In fact, the western, modern version of Christianity may be be all but swept away in the next 50-100 years, but the primitive variety is reemerging at an incredible pace.
Not many works from Oxford University Press read like thrillers. This is an exception.
