About the Author
Windy Dryden is Professor of Psychotherapeutic Studies as well as being the Programme Co-ordinator of the MSc in Rational-Emotive and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.

Dr Andrew Reeves has worked as a counsellor and supervisor in various setting for over twenty years. Originally qualified as a social worker, he specialised in child protection and adult mental health before moving to working full-time as a counsellor at the University of Liverpool. Following the death by suicide of one of his clients early in his career, he undertook extensive research into ways in which counsellors and psychotherapists work with suicidal clients and he has written extensively about this since. His recent book with SAGE, Counselling Suicidal Clients (2010) has quickly become a popular title, as has Key Issues for Counselling in Action: Second Edition, which he co-edited with Prof Windy Dryden. His award-winning training DVD, Tight Ropes and Safety Nets: Counselling Suicidal Clients (with Jon Shears and Sue Wheeler) is now being used by many therapy training programmes throughout the UK.

His new book, An Introduction to Counselling and Psychotherapy: From Theory to Practice (2012) has several aims: to help provide prospective students of counselling and psychotherapy with information to support their training decisions; to help integrate theory into their early steps in working with clients on a practice placement; and to help bridge the move from qualification into practice as a therapist.

The sixth Jack Parlabane novel

On the strength of his Jasmine Sharp/Catherine McLeod novels, Christopher Brookmyre is near the top of my growing list of Scottish writers whose crime fiction I admire (only in part due to the joyfully creative swearing that seems to characterize Scottish crime fiction). I particularly enjoy Brookmyre's ability to craft clever sentences. In Dead Girl Walking, he describes one of the bad guys as having "a domed head you could smack with a fence post for hours before you got bored." Gotta love that.

Unfortunately, I did not love Dead Girl Walking as much as I enjoy the Sharp/McLeod books. Dead Girl Walking stars beleaguered journalist Jack Parlabane. DS Catherine McLeod makes a cameo appearance but not until 300 pages have gone by. I have not read the earlier Parlabane novels so that might explain my reaction to this one, although Dead Girl Walking works well as a stand-alone novel.

Heike Gunn is the temperemental lead singer for Savage Earth Heart, a Scottish band that achieved fame on the basis of a song that became a hit after it was played on an American TV show. When Heike failed to appear at the last show of their most recent tour, the band's publicist, Mairi Lafferty, covered her absence by making an excuse about a throat infection. In truth, Mairi has no idea why Heike disappeared. It quickly becomes apparent to the reader (from her unpublished blog entries) that the band's new fiddler, Monica Halcrow, knows something about Heike's disappearance, but Monica has also made herself scarce.

Mairi hires Parlabane to find Heike. Parlabane is an investigative journalist who has been unemployed since he upset the government by refusing to divulge his sources. His history of resorting to burglary and hacking also makes him unpopular with certain police officers. Since Parlabane once covered the music industry, Mairi figures he will be the perfect undercover investigator.

Chapters alternate between the perspectives of Parlabane as he investigates Heike's disappearance and those of Monica, who blogs her experiences in the band. Both characters learn that Heike was widely seen as a self-absorbed user who gets what she can from people and abandons them. Heike has the ability to make both women and men desire her, an ability that might provoke jealousy or worse. While waiting for the two stories to converge, the reader will assemble a list of characters who might have a motive for doing something bad to Heike.

The plot is full of complications. Some women who join the Savage Earth Heart tour bus, allegedly part of a marketing scheme for a promoter, are not what they appear to be. Monica's deteriorating relationship with her fianc�, Heike's busted relationship with the band's former fiddler, and the dissatisfaction of current band members with Heike may or may not have something to do with Heike's disappearance.

The plot is solid, the characters are engaging, the prose is fine. So why didn't I love Dead Girl Walking? It lacks energy. I am surprised the story was not told with greater urgency and intensity. The pace is never plodding, but it is too deliberate. While I like Dead Girl Walking, Brookmyre didn't excite me in the way that he has in the Sharp/McLeod novels. Dead Girl Walking still earns my recommendation, and an intriguing ending sets up the next book in the series, which I'll probably read. I just hope it is a bit more energetic than this one.

Well crafted.

If you hate the trendy half novels that are so popular today you will love this book. Brookmyre's novels are detail oriented and character driven.
The mystery is well crafted.
For those people who are not as familiar with Scotland I recommend reading on a kindle. It is easier to look up the slang .
I use the language translation app as well.
The ending hints of more adventure to be had by our favorite reporter. I look forward to reading all about it.

DEAD GIRL WALKING will keep you guessing from beginning to end

There is much to love in DEAD GIRL WALKING. If there is a downside to this latest offering by Christopher Brookmyre, it’s that it takes a while to ultimately get to it. Though the story and its memorable, spot-on characters will keep one reading through the night, there are occasional passages that seem a bit too close to the literary equivalent of a stiff-legged march.

DEAD GIRL WALKING features the return of investigative journalist/gadfly Jack Parlabane, who starts the book in a familiar role: being interrogated by the police. He is still in a spot of trouble, if you will, with the residual tendrils of his past actions, however noble, clinging to him. Parlabane gives as good as he gets --- better, actually --- and his send-ups are worth the price of admission all by themselves. The problem, though, is that it does not look like he is going to get any journalism work --- freelance, employed, investigative, or otherwise --- at any point in the immediate or distant future.

Parlabane gets a career life raft of sorts thrown to him in the form of Mairi Lafferty, the younger sister of an old but deceased friend. Mairi is working as the manager of Savage Earth Heart, a hot (and growing exponentially hotter) folk rock band that is storming Europe and is on the cusp of taking on the rest of the world as well. There is a problem, though. Heike Gunn, the lead singer and focal point of the band, has gone missing near the close of their European tour, just as Savage Earth Heart is about to embark on what is sure to be an extremely profitable string of high-profile gigs in the United States on the heels of releasing their third album. There is a bit of controversy surrounding the band, which may be the reason behind Heike’s disappearance. But the point is that she is, in the words of the classic rock song, gone gone gone.

As Parlabane conducts his investigation, he keeps crossing paths (and occasionally swords) with a couple of disreputable-looking characters who may be policemen assigned to shadow him before arresting him, or individuals who are far, far worse. He knows why the police are after him. Why, though, would he be warned off looking for Heike when no one is supposed to know that he is doing so? We slowly learn the reason why as the narrative alternates between Parlabane’s actions in the present and the events leading up to Heike’s disappearance. The latter are relayed primarily in the third person from the point of view of Monica Halcrow, the newly recruited violinist for Savage Earth Heart, whose chemistry with the band --- and one band member in particular --- indirectly unleashes a chain of events that extend far beyond the performing stage.

Monica seems to have disappeared as well, making matters even more interesting for Parlabane. It appears that the band has its uses for things other than music, and someone is using it as a vehicle for more nefarious purposes. Heike has her own secrets, which leave her open and vulnerable as well. Parlabane has to sort things out, even as he dodges the police and some far more dangerous individuals. There are twists and turns along the way, and before all is sorted out, Parlabane will almost get himself in the clear. However, there is a surprise waiting.

DEAD GIRL WALKING will keep you guessing from beginning to end. What is truly amazing here is how Brookmyre captures the lives and personalities of a band on the rise. Anyone considering life as a traveling musician would do well to read this book before passing on college in favor of a G chord; it’s that spot-on.

The problem with the narrative is that Brookmyre tends to go off on rants that have little or nothing to do with the actual story. For one, he seems to have some sort of personal animus towards a particular British newspaper, which he brings up so frequently that by the time one is halfway through the story, one is tempted to phone him up and say, “Okay, we got that part. Can we get back to the story?” It’s a distraction from an already thick and complex plot that isn’t necessary.

What is necessary, however, is that you become acquainted with Parlabane; it appears that he is about to enter a new chapter in his life that will be even more confounding than his last. Jump on now.

About the Author

Tom Woolley is an architect and educator and self-builder. He has taught at the Architectural Association, Strathclyde University, Hull School of Architecture, Queens University Belfast, University of Central Lancashire, UiTM in Malaysia, University of Umea, the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales, University of Bath and University of Gloucestershire. His research work and writing has covered housing policy, sustainable materials and design theory. He is active in the Co-operative party, ARC-PEACE and Scientists for Global Responsibility. He has helped to establish the Alliance for Sustainable Building Products in the UK. Working with Rachel Bevan Architects in County Down in Northern Ireland, he is also involved in organic gardening and sustainable woodland management.

Gr 7 Up-Jonathan Swift's satirical novel was first published in 1726, yet it is still valid today. Gulliver's Travels describes the four fantastic voyages of Lemuel Gulliver, a kindly ship's surgeon. Swift portrays him as an observer, a reporter, and a victim of circumstance. His travels take him to Lilliput where he is a giant observing tiny people. In Brobdingnag, the tables are reversed and he is the tiny person in a land of giants where he is exhibited as a curiosity at markets and fairs. The flying island of Laputa is the scene of his next voyage. The people plan and plot as their country lies in ruins. It is a world of illusion and distorted values. The fourth and final voyage takes him to the home of the Houyhnhnms, gentle horses who rule the land. He also encounters Yahoos, filthy bestial creatures who resemble humans. The story is read by British actor Martin Shaw with impeccable diction and clarity and great inflection. No More Excuses - It's Time to Read Gulliver's Travels

I am certain that nearly every person in the Western world (and some beyond it) is familiar with the quintessential scene of "Gulliver's Travels," that of a man tied down to the ground and surrounded by tiny humans. I am equally certain however, that only a very small percentage of these people have actually read Jonathan Swift's satirical novel, first published in 1726. If you consider yourself a serious reader, then "Gulliver's Travels" is essential reading, one of the many classic novels that you simply *have* to read before you die.

Divided into four parts, "Gulliver's Travels" is presented as the historical memoirs of Lemuel Gulliver who narrates his strange adventures in undiscovered countries. In doing so, Swift explores and satirises almost every conceivable issue important in both his time and in ours: politics, religion, gender, science, progress, government, family and our basic ideas of defining humanity. As well as this, the novel is full of wonder and humour (some of it bordering on the vulgar!) and Swift's exploration of imaginary societies and countries is satire at its peak - no one before or since has reached Swift's mastery of this style.

Some of the more direct parodies concern people and events that have long since passed away, and as such an index or extensive background is required in order to fully understand the allusions that Swift is making. However, a far larger portion of the text discusses issues that are still relevant to today's readers, especially in the responsibilities of power and the limits to technological/scientific progression.

Part One: "A Voyage to Lilliput" is the most famous segment of the novel, and the context of the afore-mentioned "hostage episode". After taking leave of his family and country, Gulliver is washed up on the shores of an island inhabited by humanoid beings not more than six inches tall. Though at first suspicious, Gulliver soon earns the trust of the Lilliputian people who enlist their newfound giant in defending them from their enemies on the bordering island of Blefufeu - who likewise are desperate to use the giant in their war against Lilliput. Hmm, a squabble over what is considered a weapon capable of mass destruction. Sound familiar? This ability to place modern day references over older texts and their meanings is what separates literature from books - universal themes and concerns that do not age with time.

In Part Two, Gulliver reaches the polar opposite of Lilliput in "A Voyage to Brobdingnag", a country of giants where he becomes the helpless victim of a greedy farmer who exploits his diminutive stature to his own advantage. Displayed as a freak of nature, the tiny Gulliver is forced to perform circus tricks till he finally comes into the care of the royal court. Despite being cared for by the gentle farmer's daughter Grildrig, Gulliver has to survive wasp-attacks, hungry cats and a malicious dwarf before he is finally seized by a hunting bird and set adrift at sea.

One of the most appealing things about Gulliver's travels in both Lilliput and Brobdingnag is the disorientation he feels on re-entering the company of humans of a normal stature - each time they seem either too small or too big and Gulliver is constantly slouching or tip-toeing in an attempt to reconcile his body to what his mind tells him he should see. The best part is that we share this confusion with him, as we ourselves become accustomed to life in the tiny and giant worlds.

Part Three is the least known of the four parts, and for those who have read the novel, the least popular. I consider this unfortunate as it is more full of variety and wonderment than the other segments, contains some of his sharpest parodies and is my personal favourite `voyage' in the novel. Titled "A Voyage to Laputa, Balnibarbi, Luggnagg, Gluggdubdrib and Japan", it is easy to see that it this episode is filled with Swift's most creative inventions. It is here that Gulliver discovers a floating island, a race of immortals, a university in which they attempt to discover the answers to all things and an island of spirits who summon historical figures up out of the past. With everything from inward-eyed people to Alexander the Great to exploding dogs, Part Three has it all.

Finally, in Part Four, the novel reaches its most critical and thought-provoking statement on humankind in "A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms". Gulliver reaches a country inhabited by a remarkable race of horses with the intelligence of humans - perhaps with even *more* intelligence than humans. Also living here is a disgusting race of beings known as "Yahoos" - filthy, greedy, slothful, lecherous creatures who embody every vice known to mankind - and who are suspiciously humanoid in shape and form. Gulliver is faced with a crisis of the soul: does he really come from the race of Yahoos? Will the Houyhnhnms accept him as one of their own or as a Yahoo? And how can he ever return home with the devastating wisdom he has gained? Swift presents a fascinating study on the dark side of humanity and the nobility of animals in the climax of the novel that is the most controversial, the most studied and the most memorable.

"Gulliver's Travels" is not an easy book to read; like all older literary novels it requires the attention and patience of the reader, has complicated and contemporary issues to discuss and a tendency to be a bit long-winded at times. But regardless of this, "Gulliver's Travels" is a fascinating and enjoyable read and one of those books that just *has* to be read during your lifetime - if not for any other reason but to say that you *have* read it. Though the scanty amount of reviews on this page is disheartening, "Gulliver's Travels" is a must-read, pure and simple.

I also recommend the Hallmark adaptation of Swift's novel - NOT to be watched instead of reading the book, but as a surprisingly faithful and intelligent miniseries that accompanies the novel well.

NOT THE FULL TEXT!

I downloaded this free version of GT so that my Kindle would read it to me on a recent road trip. I'm teaching a college-level class and included the whole text of GT and didn't want to waste time while I was driving 14 hours when I could be reading/lesson preparing for my class. ALAS, this version is CENSORED and only HALF of the book! I am so disappointed that this isn't advertised anywhere. This Kindle edition includes Part I (Lilliput) and Part II (Brobdingnag) ONLY. It is missing Part III (Laputa &c.) and Part IV (Land of Houyhnhynms). Unbelievable. The censorship is ridiculous, too. Beware, you're getting the child-proof version of this classic.

Not just for kids!

It's amazing how our perspective changes as we age. What we thought was important as children may now seem completely insignificant, replaced by entirely new priorities, priorities children wouldn't even understand. At the same time, things we used to take for granted, like having dinner on the table, being taken care of when we're ill, or getting toys fixed when they are broken, have become items on adult worry lists.

Your perspective on literature can change, too. Reading a story for a second time can give you a completely different view of it. "Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain, which I enjoyed as a sort of an adventure story when I was a kid, now reads as a harsh criticism of society in general and the institution of slavery in particular.

The same thing is true of "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift. The first thing I realized upon opening the cover of this book as a college student was that I probably had never really read it before.

I knew the basic plot of Lemuel Gulliver's first two voyages to Lilliput and Brobdingnag, home of the tiny and giant people, respectively, but he had two other voyages of which I was not even aware: to a land of philosophers who are so lost in thought they can't see the simplest practical details, Laputa, and to a land ruled by wise and gentle horses or Houyhnhnms and peopled by wild, beastly human-like creatures called Yahoos.

While this book has become famous and even beloved by children, Jonathan Swift was certainly not trying to write a children's book.

Swift was well known for his sharp, biting wit, and his bitter criticism of 18th century England and all her ills. This is the man who, to point out how ridiculous English prejudices had become, wrote "A Modest Proposal" which suggested that the Irish raise their children as cattle, to be eaten as meat, and thereby solve the problems of poverty and starvation faced in that country. As horrible as that proposal is, it was only an extension of the kinds of solutions being proposed at the time.

So, although "Gulliver's Travels" is entertaining, entertainment was not Swift's primary purpose. Swift used this tale of a guillable traveler exploring strange lands to point out some of the inane and ridiculous elements of his own society.

For example, in describing the government of Lilliput, Swift explains that officials are selected based on how well they can play two games, Rope-Dancing and Leaping and Creeping. These two games required great skill in balance, entertained the watching public, and placed the politicians in rather ridiculous positions, perhaps not so differently from elections of leaders in the 18th century and even in modern times.

Give this book a look again, or for the first time. Even in cases in which the exact object of Swift's satire has been forgotten, his sweeping social commentary still rings true. Sometimes it really does seem that we are all a bunch of Yahoos.

About the Author
Eric D. Knapp is a globally recognized expert in industrial control systems cyber security, and continues to drive the adoption of new security technology in order to promote safer and more reliable automation infrastructures. He firsst specialized in industrial control cyber security while at Nitrosecurity, where he focused on the collection and correlation of SCADA and ICS data for the detection of advanced threats against these environments. He was later responsible for the development and implementation of end-to-end ICS cyber security solutions for McAfee, Inc. in his role as Global Director for Critical Infrastructure Markets. He is currently the Director of Strategic Alliances for Wurldtech Security Technologies, where he continues to promote the advancement of embedded security technology in order to better protect SCADA, ICS and other connected, real-time devices.
He is a long-time advocate of improved industrial control system cyber security and participates in many Critical Infrastructure industry groups, where he brings a wealth of technology expertise. He has over 20 years of experience in Infromation Technology, specializing in industrial automation technologies, infrastructure security, and applied Ethernet protocols as well as the design and implementation of Intrusion Prevention Systems and Security Information and Event Management systems in both enterprise and industrial networks. In addition to his work in information security, he is an award-winning author of cition. He studied at the University of New Hampshire and the University of London.

Raj Samani is an active member of the Information Security industry, through involvement with numerous initiatives to improve the awareness and application of security in business and society. He is currently working as the VP, Chief Technical Officer for McAfee EMEA, having previously worked as the Chief Information Security Officer for a large public sector organisation in the UK and was recently inducted into the Infosecurity Europe Hall of Fame (2012).

He previously worked across numerous public sector organisations, in many cyber security and research orientated working groups across Europe. Examples include the midata Interoperability Board, as well as representing DIGITALEUROPE on the Smart Grids Reference Group established by the European Commission in support of the Smart Grid Mandate.

In addition, Raj is currently the Cloud Security Alliance’s Strategic Advisor for EMEA having previously served as the Vice President for Communications in the ISSA UK Chapter where he presided over the award of Chapter Communications Programme of the Year 2008 and 2009, having previously established the UK mentoring programme. He is also on the advisory council for the Infosecurity Europe show, Infosecurity Magazine, and expert on both searchsecurity.co.uk, and Infosec portal, and regular columnist on Computer Weekly. He has had numerous security papers published, and appeared on television (ITV and More4) commenting on computer security issues. He has also provided assistance in the 2006 RSA Wireless Security Survey and part of the consultation committee for the RIPA Bill (Part 3).

Excellent intro to smart grid security

Imagine if the smart guys from the SANS Institute came to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and told them there it was impossible that the smart grid could be effectively secured. What are the chances that FERC and other state regulators would put the brakes on this new modern power infrastructure? The reality is that the chances would be very low, as the smart grid is coming hell or high water.

With that, the smart grid in its full-form is imminent and it is anybody's guess on how secure it ultimately will be. In Applied Cyber Security and the Smart Grid: Implementing Security Controls into the Modern Power Infrastructure, authors Eric Knapp and Raj Samani provide and excellent overview on what the smart grid is and how it can be secured. The book offers many glimmers of hope from a security and privacy perspective. The hope can shine if the security controls are correctively and effectively implemented.

Knapp is a veteran SCADA and smart grid security guru. His previous book Industrial Network Security: Securing Critical Infrastructure Networks for Smart Grid, SCADA, and Other Industrial Control Systems, which I reviewed here, is an equally valuable resource.

The book provides an introduction to the smart grid, details its architecture, and then enumerates the security and privacy issues around it. There are numerous security models for SCADA and the smart grid which the book enumerates.

For those looking for a detailed and technical introduction to smart grid security and a synopsis of the security and privacy issues, Applied Cyber Security and the Smart Grid: Implementing Security Controls into the Modern Power Infrastructure is a great place to start.

Making Smart Grid Cyber Security Accessible

Applied Cyber Security and the Smart Grid, written by Eric D. Knapp and Raj Samani, is an innovative book, as it offers a way in which we can implement security controls in the modern power infrastructure. It was exciting to find a book that was completely relevant and up to date in this field of research. Generally literature detailing the security concerns with the smart grid, focus on SCADA control system issues, ramble on about how Stuxnet was really bad and how we should have known better, or the inherent need for IT security policies. Thankfully, this is not the case in this publication.

Divided into 8 chapters, this book doesn't just focus on the security implications for the smart grid, but also details the environmental and economical factors involved. Case studies help explain security vulnerabilities and associated threats, and these connections are illustrated in figures and reference diagrams throughout the book. Furthermore, details on exploitation of these vulnerabilities are provided, as are examples of how cyber attacks on the power infrastructure can affect society. This offers the reader a well rounded understanding of why security controls needs to be implemented into the modern power infrastructure.

Also, in order to make the reader understand how these vulnerabilities can affect them, the authors detail the privacy concerns related to the smart meter. The information the power industry possess on a home user could be used in a malicious way. The smart grid vulnerability conundrum is bigger than that, but the authors assert that the problem can be fixed with tailored security mechanisms, and that's comforting to the reader.

The most notable point, in my opinion, is the interconnectedness of the smart grid. This is particularly concerning as you can draw a line from a customer's energy management system (EMS) in their home, all the way to the bulk energy control system and G-SCADA system in the smart grid. This large-scale distribution of systems makes it challenging to effectively segment these systems resulting in an architecture that makes it relatively easy for an attack to move between systems. For the reader unfamiliar with the area, an overview is provided on what the smart grid is; the components present, and the key security and privacy vulnerabilities associated. Also, there is a detailed glossary for those new to some of the industry terms, and this is quite helpful.

For those familiar with the topic, you can use the index and go to areas of interest. Detailed examples of how the security vulnerabilities in the smart grid can have major impact on society, with balanced threat analysis and protection mechanisms, is present, but at no time does it seem like we are being bombarded with information. It explains how you, the reader, could be affected by data breaches and malicious threats. While giving the reader insight into the weaknesses within the energy infrastructure, and providing them with tools for protection, they are also given a list of sources for further reading.

The accessibility of the book is what compels me to highly recommend it. Written in a friendly, informal manner, the authors invite the reader to gain an insight of the area. There is also an invitation to discuss the topic, to question and address any concerns with them through social media. Not many authors openly give permission for the reader to critique their work, and I think it is this approachable style that made this book even more enjoyable.

The experience of the authors in the cyber security and smart grid field is evident throughout the book. Eric D. Knapp brings a wealth of knowledge and firsthand experience of industrial control cyber security. His current role promoting the advancement of embedded security technology for the protection of SCADA and industrial control systems clearly brings substance to their future work claims. Raj Samani is currently working as the VP, Chief Technical Officer for McAfee, with previous experience in cyber security and research orientated working groups. Joel Langill, the technical editor of the book is referenced quite often throughout, as is his website [...] Joel's proven experience with integrated industrial control system architecture and design, functional safety, and operational security skills make him the perfect editor, to compliment the knowledge of the authors.

The authors, in their approach, have made a book that can be enjoyed by both the reader with a technical understanding of the area, and by the reader who isn't totally au fait with it, or why we should be worried about the associated vulnerabilities. All in all, I would wholly recommend this book as it is an exciting topic that is often overlooked or deemed exaggerated and irrelevant.

Excellent introduction to smart grid security

This book presents an excellent introduction to electrical smart grid security problems.

One will find a good introduction to smart grid and SCADA systems, some examples of real security problems and also an overview of the vulnerabilities of the systems, from generation to transmission/distribution.

A good reference book for those ones willing to prepare a strategy for smart grid cybersecurity, so i recommand this book.

Using this textbook I taught Statistical Thermodynamics in CHEG 825 at the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Delaware to 24 first-year graduate students in 2010. Having based my lectures and homework assignments on this book, I became very familiar with the content. Although I had a choice of several alternative texts to use instead, there is no alternative text that I would have rather used.

The text is written with succinct clarity and is understandable to an advanced undergraduate or early graduate student. The reader should have a prior undergraduate course in physical chemistry, specifically covering classical thermodynamics, as well as exposure to basic concepts in probability. For example at the beginning, the basic machinery of the subject is introduced using lucid explanations probabilistic states, microstates and fundamental postulates which ultimately lead to a natural explanation and derivation of the Boltzmann energy distribution. Throughout the book each important result is derived and each derivation is presented step-by-step. This helps the reader follow how logical and physical arguments are expressed mathematically to derive the important results. Any reader can appreciate the detail with which derivations are presented. This helps to validate his/her own understanding and helps each student as (s)he applies the methods to new problems.

I also very much appreciate that the content is both practical and interesting. This is not an expository text on all statistical thermodynamics per se. Instead there are a couple themes that are helpful to emphasize during a course. The first theme is that using these methods one can begin to calculate important engineering properties given molecular structure. The student already knows (s)he cannot do this using purely-macroscopic, classical thermodynamics. Consequently this text might be a student's first foray to understand quantitatively molecular structure-property relationships. The perspective buyer can read the table of contents to see how this is done step-by-step. The second theme is that the material can explain how many common engineering material property correlations came about, why they have limitations and how they can be improved. Now the thermodynamic correlations learned earlier in the classical thermodynamics course make sense. I found this helps elicit students' interest in the material. I found these two themes useful in my lectures.

I heartily recommend this book to those teaching+learning statistical thermodynamics as a prelude to the more esoteric methods in this field. The book provides a lucid communication of the basic concepts as well as useful methods and results which can be applied in numerous technical fields.
