About the Author

Charles E. Hurst grew up on the ethnic south-side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and his experiences there fostered a life-long interest in social inequality and social theory.� He earned his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and later his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut.� He retired in 2008 as Professor of Sociology from The College of Wooster, after having taught courses on inequality in America and social theory for over 40 years.� His research resulted in articles on class consciousness, status inconsistency, and socioeconomic status and health care, and most recently, Amish society.� His books include The Anatomy of Social Inequality (C. V. Mosby 1979), Living Theory:� The Application of Classical Social Theory to Contemporary Life, 2nd edition (Allyn & Bacon 2005), and Social Inequality:� Forms, Causes and Consequences, 7th edition (Allyn & Bacon 2010).� During the last several years, his interest in social inequality led him to conduct research on issues related to women’s status, wealth, and class distinctions within the Ohio Amish community.� With a colleague, he has completed the first in-depth study of this settlement, soon to be published by Johns Hopkins University Press as An Amish Paradox:� Diversity and Change in the World’s Largest Amish Community.

2003 Inequality in the USA is an outrage

I think most U.S. citizens don't realize just how extensive inequality is in the world and in the U.S. Hurst does an amazing job of explaining this differential. In chapter eight he quotes the United Nations Human Development Report on worldwide inequality: "In 1997 it was estimated that the total wealth of the richest 225 people in the world was over $1 trillion, which equaled the combined income of the poorest 47 percent [of the world] (2.5 billion people)" (page 161).
He provides stunning at-home statistics as well. All well documented. All seemingly credible (U.S. Bureau of the Census).
He breaks social inequality along many dimensions, explains the general explanations for such inequality, shows the consequences of it, and explains how some have dealt with these perceived injustices in the past.
I think Charles Hurst's text stands as the backbone of any program that would truly work to change the status quo of the injustices of tremendous inequalities of all kinds.
Outrage was my reaction to the extensive detail this text brings to life. Be warned, if you open this book you won't like the picture of our world that it paints.

An Excellent Analysis of a Very Controversial Film

Mr. Luckhurst has written an incisive, thought-provoking and incredibly illuminating examination of Kubrick's "The Shining," a movie that is notoriously opaque, frustrating and confusing, even for Kubrick fans. Luckhurst brilliantly and clearly analyzes the film in terms of psychology, mythology and horror film history, and he even sheds light on the evolution of the script and the reasons behind many of the film's confounding mysteries. The BFI Film Classics series has published many fascinating volumes, but Luckhurst's analysis of "The Shining" is one of the series' more indispensable offerings. Highly recommended.

Lost in the Maze of Kubrick's Overlook Hotel

I've read just about everything I could get my hands on about Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, and this brief volume from BFI Film Classics has been one of the best.

When The Shining was released in the summer of 1980, I went to see it eleven times before heading back for my senior year of high school. There was just something mysterious and hypnotic about it and I felt that if I saw it enough times, it would come to me.
(I don't mind admitting this since I've seen Room 237, the very bizarre "documentary" of wild conspiracies surrounding the film by people who's watched it literally hundreds of times, so much so that they're seeing all kinds of crazy things in it!).

But this book is a level-headed and very enjoyable look at a strange, frustrating and resilient horror film that endures to this day.

I'm sure I'll be getting more of the BFI Film Classics series. I've read others that looked at Blade Runner, Eyes Wide Shut and The Exorcist and enjoyed them immensely.

Unanswered Questions and Sloppy Analysis

Like a lot of the BFI books, Luckhurst's study of Kubrick's THE SHINING is a mixed bag, but -- despite the tone of this review -- the good does outweigh the bad. The book does a couple of things really well: Luckhurst thoroughly situates Kubrick's film in the historical context of 1960s and 70s horror films. The discussion of music in the film is also interesting, if too brief. I also thought the book raised some interesting questions about subjectivity in the film.

Although he occasionally pushes a preferred reading, Luckhurst tends to present various theories for the film's labyrinthine enigmas. This inclusivity of perspectives makes the book useful if you're just beginning to study the film's mysteries. Unfortunately, in the end, I don't think the book makes the film any more comprehensible.

Specifically, I wish that Luckhurst had devoted more discussion to the film's final shot. While he presents various theories about what the final shot signifies, he ultimately evades the question by retreating to a discussion of the ending of King's novel. If, as one of the popular theories holds, Jack Torrance has "been there all along," what does that even mean?

In that final image, is Kubrick actually parodying the twist endings popularized by The Twilight Zone (as another theory suggests)? What does that say for the echo chamber of rigorous intellectual discussion that accompanies every detail in the film in books like Luckhurst's? It starts to sound like this film is Kubrick's PALE FIRE, and, hey, he did make his own LOLITA adaptation...

Also for a book that is so consumed with subjectivity (going so far as to speculate that the film's opening helicopter shots are the POV of evil spirits), what is the perspective of this final ultra-smooth tracking shot?

Having recently watched the Blu-ray's extras which include a commentary track and Vivian Kubrick's documentary on the making of the film, I found that some of the information in Luckhurst's book was repetitious. That's not necessarily a good sign when an academic study is echoing your Blu-ray's supplemental features.

There's arguably a larger issue with the book's description of various shots in the film. In an extended passage, Luckhurst analyzes the Room 237 sequence, which he sees as the core of the narrative. I watched this sequence with the help of my Blu-ray player, pausing it while I read Luckhurst's text.

There is at least one glaring inaccuracy: describing the camera's uncertain perspective as it moves into room 237, Luckhurst writes, "Jack's presence is only established once the woman behind the shower curtain has shifted, pulled the curtain back and revealed herself as a seductive nude. The reverse shot, sharing the viewpoint of the ghost, shows Jack's face turn from terror to slack-jawed desire" (64).

The biggest problem with this description is Jack's presence is actually confirmed *before* the woman behind the shower curtain is revealed. The sequence first shows us the empty bathroom while the figure behind the curtain isn't apparent; *then* we see a reverse shot of Jack's face. After that, we see the woman pull the curtain back. This matters, because Luckhurst's discussion of the scene is focused on the complicated subjectivity of the images. Yet the cinematic grammar suggests that Jack may be imaging the woman -- she only appears after Kubrick shows us that Jack Torrance is doing the watching. This kind of imprecise description makes me wonder if Luckhurst has rendered other scenes with similar sloppiness.

There's another minor error that I noticed: Luckhurst refers to "Frank Lloyd Wright's Biltmore Hotel." Unfamiliar with that work of Wright's, I did a quick internet search which showed the hotel was not designed by him. Strange, the amount of information we can access on our computers (and phones) yet books continue to be published with errors that should be caught in the editing phase.

No doubt, these flubs, like the intentional continuity errors in THE SHINING, are enigmas placed there by the author for the reader's bemusement. Yeah, let's go with that.

About the Author
James Pommersheim is the Katharine Piggott Professor of Mathematics at Reed College. He held post-doctoral positions at the Institute for Advanced Study, M.I.T., and U.C. Berkeley, and he served on the mathematics faculty at New Mexico State University and Pomona College. Pommersheim has published research papers in a wide variety of areas, including algebraic geometry, number theory, topology, and quantum computation. He has enjoyed teaching number theory to students at many levels: college math and math education students, talented high school students, and advanced graduate students. Pommersheim earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, where he studied under William Fulton.

Tim Marks is a Research Scientist at Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Previously, he taught high school mathematics and physics for three years, and he worked for three years as a mathematics textbook editor at McDougal Littell/ Houghton Mifflin. Marks and Pommersheim have taught number theory at the Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth (CTY) summer program for 19 years. Marks earned his A.B. degree from Harvard University. He completed his Ph.D. and postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Diego.

Erica Flapan joined the mathematics department at Pomona College in 1986. She held post-doctoral positions at Rice University and the University of California, Santa Barbara. Flapan has taught a wide range of mathematics courses and has numerous publications in topology and its applications to chemistry, including her book When Topology Meets Chemistry. She developed a course entitled "Problem Solving in the Sciences,” which aims to teach students the mathematics they need in order to succeed in science and economics. Flapan obtained her Ph.D. in knot theory from the University of Wisconsin and is the Lingurn H. Burkhead Professor of Mathematics at Pomona College.

Genuinely funny! (Not to mention clear and well-written.)

This is an extraordinary book. A model of clarity, painstaking attention to detail, and all of it in a light-hearted, engaging manner. With cartoons! That are actually funny!

I compared this book's TOC to the catalog description of the Number Theory course at my school. It contains every topic in our syllabus. So it passes my first test.

Every dozen pages or so, one comes across a real gem. For example, the book discusses the AKS primality test and notes the significant contributions of undergraduates to that breakthrough. The illustrations of pineapples exhibiting Fibonacci numbers are both beautiful and illuminating.

Do not skip the "Math Myths"! They are not mere add-ons. They introduce the topics well, via engaging and well-thought-through analogies, and they are genuinely entertaining. The puns are of Daily-Show-headline calibre. It is one thing to ask a class for their ideas on how to solve the linear Diophantine equation aX+bY=1. It is another thing altogether to introduce the topic by asking the class to help Diophantus the "farmer" weigh potatoes using only a balance scale and the bricks he has on hand. The context provided by the latter provides the traction needed for students to *think* about the question for themselves.

I think this book would be especially well-suited to schools that offer Number Theory as a sophomore-level course, where students have not yet had experience with writing abstract proofs. No other book on this subject will soften that shock nearly as well, helping students make the transition to advanced mathematics by spelling out in detail the habits of mathematical thinking that we practioners of math tend to simply perform without explanation as autonomously as tying our shoes.

I will certainly be using this book for my class the next time I teach Number Theory.

monumental work of patience and love

When I first started reading this book, I was almost brought to tears at the appallingly elementary level that the book starts at: is the average American College Student so ignorant, unprepared, and childish to the point that one must start by teaching them material that would be covered in primary school in Asia and Europe, in a tone appropriate for kindergarten? However, as I kept on reading, I was amazed at the care and thought that the authors put into this book to keep the reader entertained and engaged, while at the same time making sure that no intermediate step, however small, was ever overlooked so that even the most unprepared students could be brought up to speed (as long as they work through the book diligently).

Starting from the Pythagorean theorem and the irrationality of the square root of 2, by the end of the book the reader will be able to understand the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem for the case n=4. Proofs of theorems are always preceded by numerical examples to give the reader a feel of the logic being used. Detailed instructions on how to perform proofs (including some basic English grammar) are also provided so that the reader can write proofs themselves. Various real world applications of the material are provided showing the reader the relevance of it all.

The problems are also very entertaining. The lack of solutions is not a drawback since for most problems one can easily tell whether the solution is correct or not by simply checking to see if one's solution satisfies the condition provided in the problem. Also, the joy of math is in trying to figure out the solution by oneself. If you cannot figure out an answer, just keep on thinking. You will learn nothing by trying to peek at the answer and trying to memorize it.

The authors' patience and their love of the field emanates from every page. The book is so well written that I would say that a gifted 6th or 7th grader will be able to understand it. This is a monumental piece of work that all future textbooks in math should be judged against. If you are interested at all in number theory, this book is a must have.

Postscript: as is often the case with first-editions, there are a few unfortunate typos which may be immensely confusing to the reader:

page 25, second equation: the left-hand-side should be x
page 29, first equation: the left-hand-side should be 2
page 275, table: the numbers in the second row under 5 and 8 should be 2

Hope these will be corrected in the second printing.

One of the most helpful guides I have read.

Though it starts out at a nearly absurdly fundamental level, the authors do a fantastic job at guiding the reader through the material, guaranteeing that almost no prior knowledge is necessary to get the full experience. The stories and historical anecdotes, true or not, are almost a reason to read the book by themselves. Like one of the other reviewers said, an advanced middle-schooler would be able to go through this book and understand it, as would any undergrad who has yet to take number theory. The examples and exercises are fun and engaging even to someone who has learned the subject.
Be warned, however, that the book is oriented at those who want to learn the subject, and who are willing to take the time for a deep understanding. The lack of answers is not an accidental omission, it is meant to force readers to think through the problems and come up with their own solution. The book teaches not only number theory, but mathematical reasoning and logic as well.

Sexual Virtue covers some territory covered before with respect to arguments inclusive of LGBT inclusion, but McCarty does so in ways that are more compelling than others. This is a book written for an academic and non-academic audience. So I have to give it 4 out of 5 stars for people who might have to look up some of the more academic terms. This is not a critique so much as on observation that McCarty says he wants the book to be available to all, but might be difficult for some. Beyond that, McCarty finally gives us principled reasons to be open to a wide variety of definitions for Christian sexual ethics, and not just the "be married and monogamous" trope we hear from mainline Protestants. All in all, a book to have on your shelf for traditionalists and progressives alike.

Great except excessive packaging

This is a great product, but I'm dinging it one star because what they send you is a credit card-like piece of plastic, wrapped in a jewel case-type of plastic, when all you're actually purchasing is a pass code. They should make that available electronically immediately, and quit wasting resources by using ridiculous amounts of plastic and fuel to deliver a code. Fix it, and I'd give it a 5 star. Prep U has been very helpful for studying in my nursing program. It helps pinpoint exactly which areas need to be studied further.
