Great book for anyone who wants to understand more about contemporary biosociopsychology in relation to criminals and criminal activity. Takes a broad view of genetic and environmental factors in criminal offending, particularly in how genes and the environment influence behaviour, and how the environment can influence genes (epigenetics).

It was okay....

This story has so much promise, then never really delivered. I don't like to knock books, because the authors work so hard writing them, but I was a bit disapointed in this one. The main character Raven was great, I liked her strong lead, but the male lead of Chase, I wasn't crazy about. The story was based on a woman who was married to a gambling husband who insisted she sleep with a handsome stranger (Chase) for $1000, this being in the 1800's, that was alot of money. She she reluctantly did it because she feared her husband if she didn't. When it was over, Raven soon became a widow by accident. Chase never knew and went on his way to his ranch in Montana. Raven was now alone and runs into her brother. They buy a ranch in Montana, and she soon finds out her neighbor is none other than Chase. This is where the book should have taken off, so to speak, but it never did. Chase didn't really seem to care that her dead husband used her like that and I had to wonder what kind of man Chase was to even ask to spend the night with the man's wife. It nagged me the entire book and when he felt he loved her already, I didn't feel convinced. There was also a second romance going on in the story that never ended or really took off either. The villains were real and true villians, but they also never took off, so to speak. This book had soooo much potential and it upset me that it never truly got off the ground.

A waste of time

This book was a complete waste of time. It was so bad that I actually bet a friend that she had never read such a bad book (sadly, I won). I have never read such drivel as Ms. Hess has attempted to use to pass off as a book. I think the author has watched way too many westerns and has no real concept of western life. People do not ride stallions typically yet all her characters rode them, she kept changing the animals right and left one moment it was a stallion then a gelding then a mare....that is a pretty good trick if you can get away with it. Every thing under the sun happened to these people and then AMAZING...the very next day it is all resolved. The people are not people I care about, she would throw someone in for interest and then poof, they are gone again. I am sure that living during that time was very difficult, however, some of the situtations were a little far fetched. And then at the end everyone is happy and life goes on. I am sorry but I doubt that I will ever want to read Ms. Hess again.

Relatively Good book, but with to many dead ends

The book was a good read, but it didn't stand up to previous Norah Hess novels. In my opinion Norah Hess could have done MUCH better. All Chase was interested in after find Raven at the neighboring ranch, was taking advantage of Raven and collecting what he considered to be enough sex to make up for the $1000 dollars he was out of. Though Raven was a wonderful character, I found it rediculous to have Chase pretend that they were intended to wed when Raven lost her memory, that seemed to me that that was just another way for him to collect what he thought he was due. Norah Hess can do so much better than this...

My son is like Auggie and this book is incredible.

My 5th grader has craniofacial anomalies and I feel that this book could not have been better written. RJ Palacio caught Auggie's voice so well and captured his challenges and strengths so beautifully that I still can't believe that she doesn't have a child who is living this life. I'm not going to try to summarize the story as many other reviewers have done that - I just want to talk about the emotional resonance of the work.

The sheer truth of Auggie's journey is what meant the most to me. There are so many small moments that struck me to the core - e.g. Auggie's feelings about Halloween, the way Auggie has an easier time when his classmates understand that there's more to him than his face, Auggie's struggle to move past his need for coddling, even the food that Auggie eats. The most emotional moment for me came toward the end of the book when Auggie's father tells him that he loves the way Auggie looks, because that it exactly how my husband and I feel about our son.

I wish that everyone would read this book, because it will help them understand the humanity of my son and everyone like him.

It takes a lot of skill to weave the voices of eight narrators into one compelling story, and Palacio does it so well. WONDER is a tremendous debut, a novel that coaxes out grins even as it wrings out tears. I really loved this one, and I pushed it into my middle grade son's hands as soon as I finished.

Auggie is a fifth grader. His face is so badly deformed, he spends much of his preschool years hiding under a toy astronaut helmet. When he starts attending school for the first time, he makes enemies and friends, enduring the worst kind of taunts and enjoying the best kinds of friendships.

WONDER is Auggie's story, but it's also ours. WONDER captures the dual nature of childhood, both how cruel and how tender we can be with one another. It's about the wounds we inflict and the scars we carry, all the things that teach us to do things differently the next time.

WONDER is the kind of story made for curling up and sharing, for talking and connecting. WONDER is worth talking about.

I am reading this out loud to my 9 year old whose taste in reading matter is beyond her reading ability. I also grew up with a brother with a disability. I disagree with the reviewer who said it detracted from the story that there were many narrators. In particular I found when I got to Via's chapters, and her description of the ambiguity of her feelings, how she sometimes felt overlooked, and the relief of going away to be with her grandma, I had a hard time keeping reading, and was choking back the tears. I never understood about why I had this particularly close relationship with my grandma, or that some of these ambiguous feelings could be common to siblings of children who are different. Like Via I love my brother, and was always fiercely defensive of him, and like her I struggled with my human weaknesses around him.
