Information security is more than computer data security. It is the process of protecting the intellectual property of an organization. This intellectual property is paramount to the organization's survival. Businesses are built on their information — their company secrets. These secrets may be secret ingredients, manufacturing methods, pricing agreements with suppliers, or customer lists. All of these business secrets contribute to the profitability of the company. They all must be protected.

Everyone is involved in, and in some part responsible for, the safekeeping of information. One leak can sink the entire organization. Information must be continuously protected from all sides. This requires that everyone must understand and utilize the security that protects information.

There are no simple answers to the issues of security. Unfortunately, people are all too often convinced that all they need to do to secure their information systems is to install a firewall, improve their authentication method, or write a security policy. True, each of these can help improve security, but none of them is a complete solution.

Dependence on computerized information systems is integral to all aspects of an organization. Information-related problems must be understood and managed, the same as any other business resource. Management must recognize the importance of setting policies, standards, and procedures for the protection of information and allocation of resources to achieve it. This book details the relationship between security policies and procedures and clarifies how they can reduce the chance of losses on information systems. It is a must for anyone who is responsible for information assets or a complete overview of information security.

This book is designed to unveil the breadth of issues that encompasses information security. It is an introduction to information security addressing both the business issues and the fundamental aspects of securing information. It delves into the issues involved with understanding the value of information assets, their potential cost to the organization if they are lost or disclosed, and how to determine the appropriate level of protection and response to a security incident; the technical process involved with building an information security design that is consistent, reasonable, and which utilizes appropriate intrusion detection and reporting systems; and the legal issues which require adequate protection and an appropriate response, so that not only is the information protected but also the corporate officers who are responsible for the safekeeping of the organization's information assets. It describes essential components of an information resource protection process. This process can be applied to information in any location from a personal computer to a large data processing facility. It is necessary in companies of any size — from 50 employees to 50,000 or more.

This book is derived from numerous presentations to CEOs and CIOs about information security. It addresses the issues from a business perspective, detailing the entire process of information security inside and outside the computer center. It addresses the business concerns of management as they pertain to information security.

In the security evaluations that I have performed for companies both large and small, it has been my experience that organizations have a security "hot button," one aspect of security they have addressed very well, and have overlooked other areas.

This book takes you through the steps of designing an information security program — from evaluating current processes to reviewing incident response procedures. Each section of the book, as follows, addresses one of these major steps which are required for a complete, cohesive information security program:

Inspection is the process of determining the current status and evaluating the appropriate level of security. It is this phase that creates a level of understanding of the issues and the organization's ability to address them. Protection is the proactive process of creating an environment that is as secure as possible. This phase examines the ten fundamental aspects of information security and the issues involved. Detection is the reactive process of determining inappropriate activities and alerting responsible individuals. Detection is required for those things that cannot be protected or predicted. Reaction is the process of responding to a security incident. This phase focuses on resolving a security incident to minimize the impact. Reflection is the follow-up processes necessary to evaluate the quality of the security implementation. These post-incident procedures are necessary for the organization to learn from the incident and share that experience.

This book will also explore the fundamental aspects of information security. These basic building blocks are categorized as follows:

Awareness is assuring that everyone understands the importance of security.

Access defines the medium used to contact the resource.

Identification is what is used to identify a user.

Authentication is how the user's identity is validated.

Authorization is what a user is allowed to do.

Availability is the ability to utilize the resource whenever it is needed.

Accuracy is the assurance that the information is correct.

Confidentiality is keeping the resource from being disclosed.

Accountability is assigning responsibility for actions taken on and by the resource.

Administration is the ability to manage the security attributes of the information.

Each of these aspects must be addressed to adequately protect your information. An excellent strategic guide

Pipkin's book is a nice guide to strategic information security. Don't expect buffer overflows, connection hijacking, or any other topics covered at Defcon -- this one's for planning and implementing corporate-wide security.
It could be used as a step-by-step walk through for an IT or security manager on his/her foray into managing large-scale security. Heck, that's what I'm doing, and I'm following this book cover to cover.
What are this book's strengths?
Well, I particularly like the step-by-step approach. It carves the mammoth task into smaller, more manageable chunks. It lets me see where I'm going, and it helps me to decide how deeply I want to delve into each subject. Someone could easily spend months or longer on the first chapter about assessing value. Seeing the whole process gives me some perspective on where I need to spend the most time, and what kind of resources I'm going to need to plan and implement this security plan.
What do I wish was different?
Well, the outlines are a bit sparse sometimes. The book is really good at giving structure to this whole process, but it doesn't give too many details on how to go about accomplishing each and every task. I hesistate to call this a failing, however, because it's just -too- complex. I think the book is about as specific as it could be, given its high-level strategic approach. I'm using this book as my roadmap, and searching out much more in-depth information as it becomes necessary.
In short, this book is a very welcome addition to my bookshelf. I'd recommend it to anyone responsible for information security.

An obstacle to understanding

I currently am taking a course in computer security, for which this book is required reading. To be kind, I will say that, rather than being a resource that augments and highlights the material that the instructor presents in his lectures, this book is an obstacle to understanding computer security. A quick examination of sample sentences from chapters 8 and 9 shows why.
p. 112: "Access should allow anyone who is authorized, anywhere, information can be safely distributed, at any time."
This is either an incomplete sentence or a run-on sentence.
p. 114: "Notes in user manuals may include useful, even passwords."
This is apparently an incomplete sentence.
p. 116: "Security policies are enforced uniformly throughout a security domain. It interacts with other security domains at access points."
Because the verb "are enforced" has no subject, we are left to assume that the referent of the pronoun "it" in the second sentence is "security domain."
p. 116: "A domain of trust is part of a security domain that supports a common trust model..."
Does the clause beginning with "that" modify "security domain", as indicated by the position of the clause in the sentence? Or should it modify "part", which should then probably be "the part"? Who knows for certain?
p. 117: "Switches only transmit a packet to the particular device for which it is addressed."
This is only one of many sentences in which the author misplaces the delimiter "only".
It should probably be placed before "to the particular device". By the way, shouldn't a packet be addressed "to" a device, rather than "for" a device?
p. 122: "Any specific user should have only one identifier, even if the user performs multiple roles in the organization. This simplifies the association of individual identity for both the user and for the information system. It simplifies management and issuance of identifiers and reduces confusion in tracking the user and controlling which resources he or she uses.
There must be a one-to-one relationship between the individual and the identifier. This allows for individual accountability and ensures..."
To which referents in the above passage does the indicative pronoun "this" in sentences two and five point? To which referent does the pronoun "it" in sentence three point?
p. 123: " The use of holograms, which are difficult and expensive to reproduce, are widely used."
This sentence, in its simplest subject-predicate form, reads: "The use are used."
Add to this the penchant of this writer, as is true with many writers in the field of information systems, to expand an abbreviation only the first time it is used and then to use the abbreviation forever after as if it were a word. This practice forces the student who is new to the field of information to pause every time he encounters the unfamiliar abbreviation to recall what it means.
Many of the errors in grammar and syntax that I have pointed out are relatively minor and can be overcome with a little reflection. The cumulative effect of so many errors, however, is a text that is an obstacle to understanding.
We all know that much software in use today is full of bugs. When we examine how writers in the field of information systems use the language that they have been studying since birth, however, we understand why so much software is flawed. It seems that many writers on topics related to computers consider close to be good enough. It just seems odd to me, though, in the age of software designed specifically to check for grammatical errors.

The Price of Non-Conformity in a Traditional Culture

"The Vegetarian" is unlike almost any book I've read in many senses. I picked up the book after hearing a lot of advance praise, but carefully avoiding learning much about the plot. When I told people what I was reading they assumed a straight-forward tale about a vegetarian and their personal or political choices. If that is what you're expecting best too look elsewhere.

"The Vegetarian" centers on Yeong-hye, a housewife in South Korea, who after a series of vivid but unresolved dreams becomes repulsed by meat and opts to become a vegetarian. The first section of the book, narrated by her husband, shows the deep divisions this creates within her marriage, both within the boundaries of her home, but also externally as the wife of businessman within South Korean society. There are two dramatically powerful scenes in the first section, one at a dinner event with business partners of her husband, and another at a family meal. Both encounters bring the consequences of non-conformity in South Korea and the emotional and physical violence visited upon the non-conformist.

In the second section, Yeong-hye's brother-in-law, an aspiring visual video artist, narrates the story which centers around sexual and artistic deviation in a very traditional and conservative society. While the third section is told from the vantage point of Yeong-hye's sister as she comes to grips with the consequences of her sister's decision have had on her marriage, her relationship with her parents, her husband and ultimately her sister. She ultimately comes to question her own pre-existing views on conforming to societal and cultural norms, the price one pays for doing so and how to think of a life well lived in such an environment that represses greater self-expression and identity.

"The Vegetarian" is a very thought provoking novel, beautifully written and translated that tackles broader societal questions in a personal and intimate way.

Depressing, But Worth It

Han Kang’s novel, The Vegetarian, tells the story of Yeong-hye, a non-descript South Korean housewife who, after a disturbing dream, stops eating meat as well as all animal-derived products. The novel is divided into three parts, each told from the point of view of a person who is impacted in some way by her decision. The first part is narrated by her husband, a callous, uncaring salary-man, who chose her specifically because she was unremarkable in every possible way. In the second part we see her through the eyes of her brother-in-law, an unsuccessful video artist, struggling to realize some vague pornographic vision. Finally, we see how her transformation and subsequent struggles with mental illness affect her sister.

This was a difficult one. It’s very dark with an almost constant feeling of dread hovering over it. But the story is truly gripping, not to mention that trying to work out the author’s agenda kept me turning the pages despite myself. It touches on so many large social issues – gender, conformity, moral accountability, as well as more personal things like family relationships, abuse, violence, rage and self-image.

Yeong-hye is repeatedly victimized, in various ways, by men who are either manipulative, predatory or just plain cruel. Yeong-hye’s husband is an utterly conventional corporate striver, so her inability to conform to his expectations and societal norms ultimately destroys their marriage. As an artist, her brother-in-law views himself as an outsider and projects his dark, lustful fantasies onto her in pursuit of his vision. And her sister struggles with guilt over their upbringing with a monstrous father who singled Yeong-hye out for abuse.

It’s tough to summarize one thing that this deceptively slim little volume speaks to; just when I thought I had a handle on the author’s over-arching “message” or theme, the book changed direction slightly and had me thinking about something else entirely. However, there is one particular instance of cruelty from Yeong-hye’s childhood (one of the few passages told from her POV) that strongly suggests her vegetarianism and wish to reject her humanity is a form of atonement for her role in a completely horrific act of cruelty, however powerless she was to stop it. But the story also illustrates how one person’s refusal to conform can have a domino effect on those around them - and how that might be viewed by many as destructive to the fabric of society. The writing is extremely confident and impactful. The author makes you almost believe in the plausibility of Yeong-hye’s physical transformation because her conviction seems so unimpeachable and her desire so ardent. This is a heartbreaking book that works on so many levels and touches on so many themes.

This is a taut novella, about 190 pages, divided into 3 parts, written in lapidary precision, evident even in the translation. The first part is told from the husband’s point of view: He watches in horror as his quiet, conventional life is disrupted by his wife’s refusal to eat meat. Her vegetarian lifestyle is prompted at first by a dream, but strengthened by flashbacks of cruelty toward animals that she has witnessed in her childhood. The husband is a scoundrel. He possesses a cold rational aspiration toward mediocrity and does not want his masculinity challenged by an assertive woman, so he seeks in a wife a woman who is meek to the point of being a non-entity and a cipher, a being who will mold to his aspirations to corporate success and societal convention. But her vegetarianism disrupts his “carefully ordered existence.” She even rejects intimacy with her husband because his body smells like meat, and he becomes an object of revulsion.

The wife’s refusal to eat meat, and her descent into madness, reminds me of two short stories, “Bartleby, the Scrivener” and “The Yellow Wall-Paper.” Like Bartleby, the wife’s refusal to comply with an authority figure's orders becomes a metaphor for rejecting the assumed reality of society’s conventions. Like “The Yellow Wall-Paper,” the wife is suffocated by her marriage and can only rebel by embracing insanity, which of course throws a wrench into the husband’s life of fa�ade and convention. Everyone gangs up on the wife to coerce her back to a meat-eating lifestyle. Even her own mother threatens her and at one point screams, “Look at yourself, now! Stop eating meat, and the world will devour you whole.”

The themes of society’s complicity with sanctioned cruelty toward animals and oppression against women feel real and not like a shrill militant polemic on feminism and animal cruelty. The themes grow out of the novel’s original vision, one drawn from a weird insane logic. The tone of the novel is riveting and reads like a horror novel. This is one of the best novels I’ve read in a long time. Highly recommended.

Perfect scores

I actually used the 2006 edition of this book but I'm sure it hasn't gotten worse.

My school didn't offer economics, so this was the only book I used to prepare for the AP exam. I read the book about 3 days in advance. Got two 5's.

The *only* book I've ever thrown away.

I tried to like this book. I enjoyed following along with my pregnancy each week and looked forward to reading a little about what to expect each week during my daughter's first year. But by the time she was 5 months old, I'd been instructed to let my baby cry-it-out, told I had to start solids or she'd never learn to eat on her own, and instructed that now was a good time to wean her from the breast to formula. Much of the advice in this book directly contradicts with what the AAP recommends, and even more of it contradicts with my mommy instincts. There are many great childrearing books out there, from the attachment parenting based Baby Book from Dr. Sears to the sound, mainstream advice from the AAP in Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5. Please, please - look elsewhere for a parenting book.

While there are parts of this book I enjoyed, there were many more frustrating aspects to it. The milestones seem to be consistently REALLY early. In a group of 20 babies, frequently only 1 or 2 have hit any of the milestones in the given time frame. In addition all of the feeding information is contrary to what my pediatrician has given (when and how to start solids, when to wean -- 4 months?). What to Expect was much more useful.
