Sadly, history has left us few classical martial texts. Due partly to the Chinese scholar class’ disdain for all things physically demanding, there were few literate warriors to preserve the martial techniques of antiquity in ‘songs’. This, compounded with constant upheaval, and the passing of time have left us with very few extant historical texts on Chinese sword such as ‘Fundamentals of the Wudang Sword Method’. This makes accurately translating such writings quite the daunting task.

Fortunately, we now have this work from one such ‘literate warrior’. While there are translations of sword manuals, very few are by those who have ‘walked the walk’. Rodell Laoshi’s teachings and influence can be seen the world over and is arguably responsible for the renaissance of historical Chinese sword combat training. Rarely does a martial author surface that possesses such a comprehensive understanding of the actual techniques presented in a classical work prior to translating it.

Social upheaval, sophisticated arts, and why swords are relevant

The author/translator, Scott M. Rodell, is a present-day expert on the usage and history of traditional Chinese swords and other related arms, as well as the full martial curriculum of Yang Taijiquan (Tai Chi). Many students seek him out specifically for this expertise and he regularly tours internationally to teach sword-work and Yang Taijiquan seminars. Comprehensive traditional martial arts schools of any kind are uncommon today—especially such schools teaching Taijiquan. Specifically within the Yang lineages of Taijiquan, the number of world-wide schools with authentic lineage with a full-contact and valid martial system are exceedingly rare.

An even more dire situation confronts traditional, authentic Chinese sword knowledge. If Taijiquan is endangered of soon disappearing as a properly maintained martial tradition, historical Chinese swordsmanship is already on its death-bed, perhaps to disappear forever in the coming generation. Hence Rodell’s significant role here as a living source on a subject nearly forgotten to modernity. Naturally this loss of sword experts has been compounded by recent generations left with no deep understanding of realistic swordplay dynamics, the often misunderstood context of the weapon's usage within Chinese and greater history, and (perhaps most dangerous of all) a chaotic, overwhelming modern information age without any enforced quality standards of knowledge.

It's worth considering whether our potentially fractious oncoming era has analogous or parallel resonance with the turbulent socio-political backdrop of early 20th century China, where began the ambitious military career of sword master Li Jinglin. Li’s verses on Chinese swordsmanship study and development are the focus of Rodell's translation and commentary. There's poignancy here given sword's precarious historical preservation in both eras. The historical backdrop is fascinating, though it's the collaboration of his brisk sword verses in context with Scott M. Rodell's expanded commentary which adequately conveys Li's sometimes terse instructions across disparate time periods.

It offers significant value for students of martial arts with internal work, by demonstrating how to re-apply serious internal development to further progress by sword training, and also ought to help in the modern lack of knowledge regarding sword arts. A gold mine of insights into historical swordsmanship

This new book by Scott M. Rodell is a gold mine of insights into historical swordsmanship. Rodell's expert translations are based on over 30 years of practical sword experience. My favorite is the sequence of training, where he talks about the different steps required for solo practice first and and sword play second. This book does not contain specific sword techniques, I recommend also getting his other book, "Chinese Swordsmanship," which is an encyclopedia of techniques and forms for both the public and Michuan Taiji sword systems.

Guinea Pig Missing!

Guinea Pig in the Garage was a great book! It was a great book because it made me get sad, and happy, and laugh. Also I thought this book was going to end in a sad ending. But you have to like guinea pigs to like this book. So...if you like what your hearing so far then read the next paragraph to hear what the book is about!
Mandy Hope a girl who wants to be a vet asks a friend if she can baby sit guinea pigs for her. And all is well until the friend loses a baby guinea pig! Now Mandy and her friends have to help find the guinea pig before it dies! I think this was a great book and I am sure you will too. And remember you have to love guinea pigs to love this book.

Mandy's friend Rachel is asked to watch a neighbor's guinea pigs. Hopefully Rachel will be able to have her own guinea pig if she shows how responsible she can be. But one of the babies goes missing, and Mandy has to help Rachel find him. Will Rachel and Mandy be able to find the baby before it's too late?

This is a must if you are looking for the type of book that'll take you to the next level. If you are a Revit user an want/need deeper knowledge of his software, I highly recommend. I've been implementing the lessons from the book straight to my projects because of its practicality and ease of explaining the subject matter. If you have any real world experience with Revit you are aware of how much customization has to take place since, although very complete, the families and templates included have to be modified to meet office standards as well as manufacturer specific content.
This book gives you the tools you'll need to fully implement Revit.
*Not for beginners, you have to get a good grip on the basic mechanics of the program and some experience before you dive in. If you are there, I feel completely confident in recommending this book.

ESSENTIAL Guide to Revit

This book is my go-to guide to revit workflows. Whenever I feel that the program is starting to fight back against me, and I am getting bogged down in mundane autodesk workflow, this book comes to the rescue. I can't stress enough how important this book is to an aspiring revit user, especially in the architecture field. With this book, I went from a simple beginning user of revit to a full-blown advanced user in about 6 months. This book goes over all of the things you run into as an introductory user that frustrate the hell out of you - linking building models to site models, phasing, railings and stairs, wall types, floor types... I could go on, but I'd end up just re-writing the book.
The only thing that this book doesn't go over, and that I haven't really seen a great guide on how to document, is how to properly model and document existing conditions using parts and phasing, and I don't really think the software has even gotten to the point where that is intuitive yet.
To summarize - BUY THIS BOOK. It is like 500 pages long and will solve almost all of your problems.

Economics for busy business managers

As an instructor in a graduate course in managerial economics for non-economists, I have struggled to find texts which would appeal to students and professionals who are sceptical of the value of economics as a discipline which can help in solving business problems.
Professor Maital's book is an exception. It speaks directly to executives by focussing on the kinds of strategic problems they face, and introducing fundamental economic concepts by illustration, not by the formalistic exposition of standard texts.
I find his book as an excellent way to illustrate key concepts such as opportunity cost, marginal cost, economic versus accounting costs, and other concepts that unfortunately too often mystify students - or turn them off.
Even if many of the examples now seem dated, I would heartily recommend this book to both instructors and students who seek to bridge the world of business problem-solving with the tools of theoretical microeconomics.
The book is organized in ten highly readable chapters. My favorite quote from the book: "If you face no tradeoffs, your company is poorly managed."

An amazing book on economics for busy executives

The title of the book really says for it. This is trully a book for very busy executive managers in all kind of businesses. As a senior manager in a number of businesses, I very much understand that while management is about economics of business, little knowledge about economics as a science is known to many managers. The 10 tools for managers as described in the book are almost all the "micro-economic knowledge" business managers should know. This book brings an outstanding approach to studying economics, that is most understandable, practical and effective. I got a MBA in management and am still questioning myself why this book is not yet so popular among all biz schools. It will be, and the approach of the author to "teaching economics" will be popular one day, I believe. Whether you already got MBA or don't ever consider going to study management, I recommend this book to you as a must read. Moreover, there is as much fun as enlightenment reading it.

Excellent for MBA Students

Professor Maital's book has been used at ECU (Perth, Western Australia) on 'executive' short courses and MBA programs for several semesters. "Executive Economics" has been successfully combined with more 'conventional' or mainstream economics texts. Students have thoroughly enjoyed Maital's exposition of key economic ideas and find the blend of accessible theory backed up by real world examples very helpful in their studies. However, "Executuve Economics" is now rather 'long in the tooth'. The 1990s have provided so much new material for books of this kind. A second edition, revised and updated would be most welcome.

Robert J. Schilling is Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clarkson University. Dr. Schilling's teaching interests include digital signal processing, control systems, robotics, nonlinear systems, computer graphics, and C++ and MATLAB programming. His research interests encompass adaptive signal processing, nonlinear system identification, active noise control, and control of robotic manipulators.

Bio: Sandra L. Harris is Associate Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at Clarkson University. Dr. Harris's teaching interests include process control, thermodynamics, and biochemical engineering. Her research interests center around periodic processing, control of systems having varying dead times, and the generation of input signals for efficient process identification.

More Mathematical than Practical - I sent it back

I was looking forward to receiving this book. I'm now working with Matlab in my job, but I am not a programming expert. I had hoped that this book would bridge the gaps in my knowledge. However, the book is written in a very mathematical, hard-to-approach style. I'm no dummy, but I couldn't use this book in a practical way. I sent it back - the first thing I have EVER returned to Amazon. To Amazon's credit, the return was super easy. As an alternative, give this one a look: Matlab for Engineers, by Holly Moore. I loved it!

I have two other books by Eleanor Winters and all are excellent. This book expands on the basics of Italic and Copperplate and includes an introduction into flourishing and Illumination. I particularly like the way , in all of her books, she shows examples of poorly spaced or incorrectly penned letters. She explains why they are not correct and how to correct them. . This, in my opinion, is what is missing in most other instruction books on calligraphy.

Other books I have and recommend by Eleanor Winters are " Calligraphy in Ten Easy Lessons" which is basic instruction on the Italic hand. And "Mastering Copperplate Calligraphy, A Step by Step Manual " In these books there are detailed instructions on stroke order and examples of correctly and incorrectly penned letters for each letter of the alphabet

Excellent book in every respect

I bought this book for my wife Sheila, who has been teaching calligraphy for many years. Here are her comments: I have been using Eleanor Winters' books for over ten years as a reference guide and as a teaching aid for classes I give in introductory Italic and Copperplate. Ms. Winters' new book, which covers "the basics and beyond" of Italic and Copperplate, highlights the similarities and differences in these two popular hands with characteristically clear explanations and illustrations. I intend to use it as a textbook when I conduct classes at the intermediate and advanced levels. Although there are many introductory calligraphy books available, "Italic and Copperplate Calligraphy: the Basics and Beyond" fills a large space in our calligraphy library, providing instruction, exercises, and examples for students who are ready to go beyond the basics. I have been waiting for the publication of this book for a long time, and I am delighted that it is finally available.

Beautiful & Helpful Book

This is the second of Ms. Winters' books that I have purchased. This book is intended to expand upon the first, as it is directed towards an "intermediate" calligrapher. I have been through the exercised in the book multiple times (I use Copperplate, but found the Italic interesting, as well). This book is not for beginners, but if you've had a class in Copperplate or Italic and have mastered the basics, you will benefit from this book. The alphabet illustrations are beautifully drawn and the instructions clear and precise. Love the book!
