Tristan Vick graduated from Montana State University with degrees in English Literature and Asian Cultural Studies. He speaks fluent Japanese and lives in Japan with his wife and daughter. Looking at the big picture

Using a logical approach, Tristan Vick answers to the ultimate question: "Does God exist?" by taking a step back and asking: "What do you mean by 'God'?", since rarely do people define God in the same manner. The concept of "Ignosticism", though new to me, is probably the best starting point to a better understanding of why religious fundamentalists are wrong. A clear, well-written, down-to-earth explanation of the concept and its multiple repercussions will give the potential reader an new perspective to the question which atheists and believers seem to take for granted.

I absolutely loved this book, and would definitely recommend it to anyone: atheists, agnostics, and believers.

Thought provoking, but unconvincing.

* I'm from Korean, so sorry for my awful English.

The reason I bought this book is, as an agnostic seeker, to know more about Ignosticism and Theological noncognitivism. I'm really interested in this position, but there are not very much materials about. In fact, there are few contemporary philosophers in religion who talk about theological noncognitivism(as far as I know, only two; Michael Martin and Kai Nielson). So first time I saw this book, I said, "Oh, great! Now I will learn more about Ignosticism and some philosophical argument for that position."

As it turns out, I did. But at the same time, I'm unconvinced, so I can't recommend this book.

Before criticizing this book, I should mention some good things in book. I generally agree with author's observation about theist's way of defining god, especially when he talk about cultural and psychological influence. that part is well-established and backed by references from professionals like Pascal Boyer. I also like his writing style. It makes me easy to understand his argument, or at least make me think that I understand his argument.

That said, I think main argument of the book fails.

Briefly, main argument of this book is like this.
1) If some concept or definition is about real object, It's description has real link to that.
2) If some concept or definition has real link to that, It should pass the Referential Justification.
3) God concept does not pass the Referential Justification.
4) So, God concept is not about real object.
5) As a result, talking about existence of "God" is meaningless(because it can't exist in real world).

Someone who read this review may be curious about premise 1 and say, what does it mean that "having real link to object?" Well, according to the book, it means that the object which is described by the definition is verified, and so its definition is verified by inspecting the object. This means when you want to say that your definition of x has real link to object x, you must show object x is empirically verified and examine your definition with object x.

But the problem of that reasoning is that there are something that supposed to exist, but can't be empirically verified. One example of that thing is "other minds". When I say "mind", I don't mean some dualistic souls which already assumed the supernatural exist, but mean subjective experience dependent on human brain. I know I have a mind. You also does, because you can experience yours. But how about the others? How can we empirically verify other people's subjective experience? You can hear other people's testimony or examine their brain, but eventually don't know whether other people are just like us or philosophical zombie. So this fact makes other minds don't exist? Unless you are a hard skeptic or solipsist, you don't think so, but justification of that is not empirical, but philosophical. The situation is same when we question about existence of world itself(Is this real? or is everything just illusion?), time, abstract object, causality etc. And because of their non-empirical nature, some their definition is also not empirically derived, and some of it like abstract object is entirely non-empirical.

So there are something that supposed to exist, but can't be empirically verified. And even more, there are something that many philosophers think that exist, but has no "real link" to their definition(like God). I think this fact makes whole book in problem, because it seemed to me that the book's hidden premise is this.
0) If something exist, it can be empirically verified.
And If this is false, then premise 1 is also false, so the conclusion of the formula above is also false. So the author has to whether accept that these concepts are also meaningless to discuss like God, or offer some other reason why God concept is meaningless when other non-empirical, philosophical concepts have meaning. Or, he can just admit God concept is, at least, as meaningful as those concepts.

But, I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong, and he is totally right. But there is not much material about this topic and vitually no material about this topic discussed by professional philosopher, I think I can't know who's right even in future.

A blistering critique of a disturbed mind and worldview

In "Diary of an Anti-Chomskyite," Benjamin Kerstein exposes Noam Chomsky for what he truly is and always has been: "a consistent and dedicated supporter and/or apologist for tyranny, terrorism, political violence of all kinds, and sometimes horrifying acts of mass murder."

The material in this book was originally published on Kerstein's blog, and you should know that going in, but don't let it stop you. Most of the pieces are essay and chapter length.

Fans of Chomsky, along with extremist fellow travelers like Howard Zinn, will hate this book. There's no getting around it. But those who abhor the Chomskyite view of the world, in which the United States is akin to Nazi Germany and seeks to subjugate the planet beneath the heel of its jackboot, will almost certainly appreciate Benjamin Kerstein's epic-length series of take-downs. Those on the fence about Chomsky--perhaps former admirers who aren't so sure any more--are likely to find Kerstein's analysis hard to argue with.

Extreme leftists need to read this more than anyone, but mainstream liberals, conservatives, and libertarians will find it much more enjoyable.

Disemboweling Chomsky

Reading the blog from which the collection 'Diary of an Anti-Chomskyite' was culled kept me sane while living in San Francisco. I came pretty late to the site, and quickly turned to the very beginning, reading the entries in order-- pretty much as they're likely presented here.

I won't dwell too much on the content (which is, of course, excellent), but the style is remarkable and in the tradition of the great literary take-down artists. In the last few years, Kerstein has brought his talents to slapping around some of the left's lowest provocateurs (Max Blumenthal and Glenn Greenwald)-- fairly, but in truly brutal fashion. All of it makes for wonderful, pleasurable reading. The left's disembowelment-in-print has never been such great reading.

Telling the Truth About Chomsky's Lies

Kerstein spent three years from 2004 to 2007 reacting to Chomsky's public pronouncements on the events of the time, principally events in the Middle East. I share his disdain for Chomsky's views and appreciated his zeroing in on the inaccuracy and lack of scholarship in what he publishes. Kerstein points out that while Chomsky has spent his entire life as an American academic, he has used the platform of academia to provide aid and comfort to murderous regimes and terrorist organizations, and to trash the country that nurtured and supported him. Kerstein muses on whether Chomsky is a criminal or suffering from some sort of mental instability. Altogether, this book is a welcome antidote to the distorted views of Noam Chomsky which have influenced far too many credulous and impressionable people.

It really IS wordless

What a cool book! The problem is presented in a cartoon. For instance.. (I have six kids, this is my favorite)... a woman sorting through laundry to wash, trying to separate the colors. Laundry is all over the floor in front of the machine.
The solution: A frame is built which holds six little trash bins, stacked up one on top of the other, so clothes can be sorted into them by color, without taking up much floor space at all. Then the woman is shown, emptying the whites into the washer - no mess!
No words are used but the methods of creating these little organizational solutions are very simple to understand.
I am not a handyman (or handywoman) at all, but I really felt these concepts were clear, and we have used several of the solutions presented.
Other little gems in this book are: drawing paper dispenser, making a 2-pole closet, creating a nice organizer for rakes, shovels and the like, a neat little stand for roller blades, a ball stacker that goes on the back of a door, and even a baby bottle rack.
Every project is simple to do and easy to understand.
I recommend this book for any large family! Some of us just need to have every organizational tool we can get our hands on!!

A Well "Written" Work with a Wealth of Ideas

Doty divides his subject matter into five categories: 1. Cabinents, Closets, & Shelves; 2. Around the House; 3. The Workshop; 4. Sports, Toys, and Entertainment; and 5. The Great Outdoors. Each section contains from six to seventeen individual projects, 60 some odd projects in all.
The projects are set forth in a series of wordless cartoon panels. The first panels state the problem, and the final panels present a simple, easily "engineered" solution to the problem.
The cartoons are well drawn and amusing. The step-by-step directions are understandable and within the capacities of the most inept hammer-mechanic. You can follow the directions exactly, or you can let your imagination soar as you adapt the projects to your specific needs.

Wordless Cartoons

I had seen this book in the stores when it was first published. When I went to buy one it could not be found an so a couple of years went by an I would think about it when I would see one of the cartoons in the back of a woodworking magazine. Finely decided to look on the internet to see if I could fine one. Got this one an just love it. I have already used a couple of the projects from the book.

It is well organized and easy to follow with the bullet point type format

I am a first year dermatology resident and I recently purchased this resource. My goal was to read all the way through Bolognia this year and I have been taking notes in another review book as I go. This is cumbersome as I find myself having to add a plethora of important missing information. Since I bought this book I have realized that it is very comprehensive. It includes every important pearl from the corresponding text in Bolognia and I find myself not having to add anything. It is well organized and easy to follow with the bullet point type format. This will be my primary study source from here on out as I prepare for boards over the next two years. I am very excited to have such a reliable and thorough text to use. I highly recommend this review book to any dermatology resident!

Comprehensive, up to date- GREAT FOR BOARDS!

This book is an excellent and comprehensive review of dermatology. It is packed with relevant, up to date, and boards related information. Compared to Jain, the other dermatology review book on the market, this is MUCH more comprehensive and up to date. The information presented is clinically relevant and is helpful not just for studying for boards but also managing patients. For example, in the pharmacology chapter, there are important drug monitoring recommendations (tests, timing, frequency, etc). All of the best figures and tables from other Elsevier derm texts/journals (Bologna, Hurwitz, JAAD) are all integrated into the text. It's an excellent book and I would recommend it for all derm residents studying for the boards. It would also be helpful for 4th year medical students on their Derm rotations or practicing clinicians looking for an up-to-date review of Dermatology.

Excellent study resource

As someone who took and passed the dermatology board certification exam this previous year, I just wish this was an available study resource at that time. The quality and breadth of information is superior to that of Jain (which was the go-to for boards studying but suffers from errors, outdated information, and omission of important topics), and the excellent figures and tables (often adapted from authoritative sources such as the Bolognia textbook) are a welcome addition as well. I find this book to be incredibly useful in clinic, both as a quick reference as well as a teaching tool for residents. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to my residents and anyone else who is planning on taking the board certification exam in the future.
