In Iran�s Revolutionary Guard, Steven O�Hern reveals new information about the IRGC and Hezbollah operations inside America based on interviews with former and active members of the FBI, CIA, local law enforcement, military intelligence, and even one former Revolutionary Guard officer. The author details how the IRGC has grown into such a dangerous foe and explains how its members� activities have put the American economy and American lives at risk. His research suggests that the IRGC may be planning to explode, high above a Midwestern city, a nuclear weapon that would emit an electromagnetic pulse strong enough to render anything with a computer chip useless, including the hundreds of transformers that control the country�s electrical grid.

About the Author
STEVEN O’HERN is a retired military counterintelligence officer, an Iraq War veteran, and an attorney. While serving in Iraq, Colonel O’Hern directed intelligence operations against the IRGC; that experience informed his first book, The Intelligence Wars: Lessons from Baghdad (Prometheus Books, 2008). He has taught at the Counter Threat Institute International, a California-based company that provides counterterrorism training to military personnel and law enforcement officers. He lives in Overland Park, Kansas.

A superb book on what is actually happening

This is an excellent book on an important subject. Colonel O'Hern has done his homework and has done it in the line of fire as well. He knows his subject matter very well, and his analysis is superb and to the point. O'Hern's prediction that the conflict with Iran is likely can not be overstated enough. His criticism of the MEK cult is on the mark, his analysis of the IRGC's network and agenda is truly remarkable. I do hope that the clueless members of the US congress (or I may add members of all western governments and parliaments across the Atlantic as well) are actually reading this serious book. The threat of the Iranian regime through its fanatical IRGC arm is serious, but no one has really paid much attention to it. Hopefully this book will open many eyes to the reality.

This book changed my life.

I did not understand the situation in the Middle East until I read this book. Now I see clearly the dire scenario that the world faces as Khomeinist Iran goes unchecked. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about America and the freedoms that we now have...freedoms that we may not have forever if Americans do not wake up. Thank you Mr. O'Hern for writing this book. I am now going to recommend it to everyone I know.

Superb, Concise Overview of the Iranian IRGC- Must Read!

Steven O’Hern’s second work, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, is a highly readable and concise overview of the Iranian IRGC. O’Hern presents an engaging book written for “citizens, military, law enforcement members, and others to become familiar with the Revolutionary Guard. Although full of details, it does not attempt the deep analysis of factions within the IRGC and the Islamic regime of Iran that is popular with the think tanks and academic writers.”

This is the strength of the book- it is a superb and well researched entry point for the citizen or policymaker to begin a more in depth and detailed understanding of the topic. O’Hern avoids the unhelpful and often misleading labels such as “reformist” or “hardliner” so often seen in think tank works and policy debates, and instead portrays the IRGC through a recounting of its own key statements and violent actions. One of the main and disturbing themes of the book is that the IRGC has a long history of successfully conducting violent attacks against US persons and interests with little US reaction. Beyond the terrorist attacks and potential for violence, O’Hern highlights the larger role of the IRGC in the Iranian economic, policy, and nuclear realm.

This book is a must read for those looking for background on the current headlines and those looking for a deeper understanding beyond the cable news sound bites.

Chapter 10, with its famous sun-centered diagram of the planetary system, was intended to convince not by physical or astronomical "proof," but by aesthetics, by the beauty of the explanation. Clearly the persuasion would be in the eye of the beholder.

Each of Copernicus’ arguments concerns the planets, those heavenly bodies that moved against the fixed patterns of the distant stars. He demonstrated that the principal complications in the planetary motions could be elegantly explained by attributing movement to the earth itself. From a geometric point of view, Copernicus’ arguments were highly compelling, but to the great majority of his contemporaries, any claims for physical reality seemed ridiculous. If the earth were spinning daily on its axis, a stone thrown upward would surely land in another county. As the great Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe would say later in the sixteenth century, "The Copernican arrangement nowhere offends the principles of mathematics, but it casts the earth, a lazy, sluggish body unfit for motion, into a movement as fast as the aetherial torches [i.e., the stars themselves]."

Copernicus's wonderful revolutions

Though some of his ideas or "philosophys" are extreemly out of date, it is a marvel to read the book that first experessed the "crazy" ideas that are now common knowledge for a 3rd Grader. I feel that anyone intent on studying philosophy, astronomy, mathamatics, or is just very intrested in the greatest works of all time should deffinitly read this book. Although sometimes hard to understand (Nicolaus is not the greatest writer) because of it's crypticness, it is a "must read."

About the Author
Jannah Mather is Dean of the University of Utah College of Social Work and the co-author of UNDERSTANDING GENERALIST PRACTICE WITH FAMILIES. She has over 20 years of experience in private practice, in-patient therapy, and family services. Her writings include works on case management, family therapy, child welfare, family and children services, social work education, and accreditation.

Patricia Lager is the Faculty Administrator and Director of International Programs at Florida State University. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (Florida). Her areas of interest include child welfare, treatment of children and families, clinical supervision, ethical and liability issues, field instruction, and international social work.

Norma Harris joins the team as the new co-author. She teaches at the University of Utah and is the Director of the Social Research Institute, Title IV-E Coordinator and Chair of the Public Service Domain. She has a Bachelor of Science from Montana State University, MSW from the University of Utah and a PhD from Florida International University. A good easy to understand way of learning about scrum!

I have managed engineering and marketing organizations so I was curious how this methodology could be taken out of one arena into another and produce benefits worth the effort. This book does a good job at explaining how to do it. In this day and age of lengthy books, I found it refreshing that this book simplified the process of explaining the benefits of scrum in a simple and easy to understand manner. I also liked how I could get through the book in less than an hour.

I will definitely take the key learnings from the book as part of a toolkit that I will use with my clients.

Not the book I expected

The 1986 version of Take Care of Yourself has been the mainstay of our home medical library for 20 years. I purchased this "latest edition" assuming that the book had been improved, but it's not the same book. This is a standard paperback and as admittted in the forward has been shortened from the original. It sure has. We spot checked a few places and found it very lacking. For example "Croup" would seem like an important subject for a home medical guide. The original version had an excellent section which I'm sure has helped many an anxious parent the first time they were faced with a child with croup at 2 am. The new book doesn't even address it. Copies of the Eighth Edition of several years ago are still available. That is the version to own.

Some people love to travel to foreign countries, Texas John loves to live in foreign countries.

Too many travelers count how many countries they go to and wear the number like a badge of honor. Tex doesn't place a lot of value in that. How much did you really learn in your 4 days in Paraguay about the people and the culture?

Tex prefers to stay and work for months or years wherever he goes. He has spent 5 years in China, a year in Japan, a year in South America, and half a year in the Philippines. He believes if you haven't worked in the country then it is impossible to understand it.

Texas John is currently in an undisclosed location in Asia.

Learned more about the Chinese from this book than from anything else I've read.

I down loaded this because it was free and I'm cheap and I always check out books about Americans teaching English abroad because some of them are quite interesting. Then I got to looking at the stupid cover picture and the dumb title and the moronic nom-de-keyboard and I thought life's too short to waste on another pile of drivel by some idiot who went someplace, got a job teaching English, stayed drunk the whole time, and embarrassed himself and his country. I really wish I could remember why I started reading it.

It doesn't matter because once I started I was hooked like a large-mouth bass. This guy is funny and he can write. Furthermore, he stayed in China an amazing FIVE YEARS. A year is a LONG time for most Americans to stay in China and many fold after a few months, which is why there are always lots of teaching jobs. And I owe him an apology because he DIDN'T stay drunk the whole time, but seems to have genuinely made a effort to do the job he was being paid for. Actually, the man is mature, intelligent, and thoughtful, but don't tell him I said so. Clearly he prefers to pass himself off as an irresponsible goofball and that's fine.

While he breaks the chapters down by year, this is basically a collection of stories. Most are funny because he's the kind of guy who finds the humor in situations even while he's cussing and pulling out his hair (or someone else's hair.) So as entertainment, the book is well worth your time. What sets it apart is that each story is followed by a "Cultural Take" comment where he explains what this incident taught him about the Chinese and the way they think.

Most Americans in Asia simply accept that the locals behave oddly (to us) and order another round of drinks. Why did this author CARE why his Chinese colleagues, friends, and enemies act the way they do? It's because he's a saleman. He worked part time in sales while in school and then went into professional sales and then became a headhunter, which is also sales because you're selling the company to the candidate and then selling the candidate to the company. And he loved sales and realized that it fits his personality. He took a job teaching English only because that was the easiest way to stay in China for an extended period.

So he was technically an educator, but that saleman's personality never went into hibernation and a salesman (a real one, not just an order taker) HAS to know what the other guy is thinking. Unless you get inside the other person's head, you can't sell him anything. So every time he interacted with the Chinese, his mind was asking, "Why are they acting like this? What are they thinking?" And with observation and some help from Chinese friends and co-workers, he started to understand Chinese culture and how it molds individual and group behaviors. That's not to say he fell in love with the Chinese way of thinking and acting. He didn't always love it, but he did start to understand it. And now he passes five years' worth of understanding along to the reader in a hilarious, fascinating book that entertains as it educates.

If you're going to China or have contact with Chinese in any way, this book is invaluable. I've even read books by Chinese authors claiming to explain Chinese culture to Westerners and I ALWAYS finish more confused than I started. I finally realized that the Chinese don't WANT us to understand them. You have to learn about them from an insider who knows the ropes and who's better with ropes than a Texan? I would LOVE to see this book marketed to professionals doing business in China. It would help them far more than the crap they're reading now. I hope Tex is at work on a book about his experiences in Latin America. I'll even be willing to pay!

Read from start to finish in one day (not impossible due to length) and laughed the entire way through the book. Knowing the author personally made it even more enjoyable and easier to relate to his experience in China. It's definitely worth buying and reading!

What great stories! My stomach hurts from laughing so much. John is an extremely funny guy....and a fantastic writer. This book is unique. Who knew that reading could be so much fun! This book is definitely a "page turner"!
