About the Author
Patrick Hurley was born in Spokane, Washington in 1942. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics (with a Physics minor) from Gonzaga University in 1964 and his Ph.D. in philosophy of science with an emphasis in history of philosophy from Saint Louis University in 1973. In 1972 he began teaching at the University of San Diego, where his courses have included logic, philosophy of science, metaphysics, process philosophy, and legal ethics. In 1987 he received his J.D. from the University of San Diego and he is currently a member of the California Bar Association. He retired from teaching in 2008, but continues his research and writing. His interests include music, art, opera, environmental issues, fishing, and skiing.

Nice Introduction to Logic

The Hurley book came within a week, a bit better than expected.
Except for packaging, which left an impression of work performed in a hurry, all went well with the book delivery process. The book I received was new and in good condition when it arrived.
The book is fairly straightforward, easy to read and does not penetrate the subject as deeply as many pedagogical textbooks do, especially those involving concepts of Mathematical Logic. Much of the logical symbolism and symbols, e.g., logical operators, are treated toward the end of the book as a more advanced topic since the first few chapters are dedicated to an introductory treatment of Logic in general, especially for the uninitiated.
All in all - nice book introducing Logic and its concepts to people who are unexposed to the subject, or never studied it formally.

A fine tool for the study of logic and language

This book was recommended to me by a former professor who has extensive background in the teaching of logic of logic and language. Having four other texts dealing with this subject, I often consult different books when searching for differing examples. The C.D. Rom that accompanies the Hurley text is a great source for review and practice, and certainly one of the best parts of owning the book. I only wish other books, dealing with various topics would have C.D. that accompany them.

I was searching for a more complete sense of connotation and denotation. Cheap, reductivist definitions can't wave a stick at the complete senses a cursory read-through of this book yields.
