A Unified Approach-At Last!

I have read some excellent books and survey papers describing particular domains of the evolutionary computation field, but this book try to give us a "Unified Approach" of this field.

I find very interesting the author's idea to model the evolutionary process with a dynamic (nonlinear!)system so that "...given particular initial conditions the system follows a trajectory over time through a complex evolutionary state space. One can than study various aspects of these processes such as their convergence properties, their sensitivity to initial conditions, their transient behavior and so on."[pg. 2 of the book]. And, I can add, why not "chaotically behaviors".

Great book for a theoretical overview

This book shows a unified view of genetic algorithms, genetic programming, and related fields. It includes some discussion of the historical development of the disciplines and presents the theory behind them.

However, while it does fit an undergrad course, it is not a book for practitioners, since most algorithms are not explained in detail.

Sexist jerk "hero"

I couldn't get past Chapter 3. It read like it was written in the 80s, the era of the "alphahole" hero. The "hero" in this story has zero respect for women, and is a lecherous scumbag. He follows the heroine around, touches her constantly when she's made it clear she doesn't want to be touched (and laughs at her when she objects) and when I put the book down for good he was dragging her around a wedding reception like a parcel. She doesn't want to dance with him? Too bad--she's GOING to dance with him.

Lilan got the impression his suggestion was more along the lines of a command and suddenly she'd had enough.

"I don't want to dance," she announced stubbornly, digging her heels into the floor and trying to prise his fingers apart without causing a scene.

He simply ignored her puny efforts and growled, "That's too bad, wild thing," as he steered her towards the dance floor, where he yanked her against his chest and snaked his arms around her. They felt like bands of iron. "Besides, you don't want to make a liar out of me, do you?"

Some guy did that to me, I'd be kicking his nuts up into his left lung. It's certainly not romantic.

A great read

Tamed by Her Army Doc’s Touch is a medical romance by Lucy Ryder. It is a cute book and one that I enjoyed reading.
Dr. Lilah Meredith could not ignore the possibility that the boy who jumped into the water was not swimming but drowning. In spite of the fact that she was at a bachelorette party and not dressed for swimming herself, she quickly took off her dress and shoes and dove into the water in only her underwear (luckily it was from some designer’s wild collection instead of her normal ordinary wear). She was intent on finding the person who was in trouble.
Luke Sullivan was simply enjoying his friend, Greg’s bachelor party, when he saw a woman on the boardwalk ditching her dress and shoes before taking off down the pier. He watched as she attempted to stop the party boat heading to sea. She didn’t hesitate and dove into the water. As he watched, he saw she was headed for someone in trouble in the water. Without a second thought, he jumped over the balcony to the boardwalk and headed after the woman. He shed his own clothes down to his underwear and dove after her to help. His army medic training simply would not let him do anything else.
Half frozen from the cold water, he and Lilah dove again and again to retrieve the young man. They got him to a rubber dinghy and hoped the cold water had slowed down his vitals enough that he would survive. Once at the wharf, he helped Lilah with CPR on the young man. He took over the compressions while she did the breathing. Later when the young man began coming to, Luke told her she had given the young man the kiss of life.
When Lilah was joined by her friends, they informed her that she had been working with Lucky Luke Sullivan, the assistant director of medicine’s nephew. The ADM of the hospital at which she worked! Luke worked in the hospital as well. That was just what Lilah needed, a rich doctor to play with her senses and then ditch her. Not what she wanted and not what she would allow. After all, how often would they meet up in the hospital? Quite often it seems.
The doctors at the hospital were on rotation to go with the medical helicopters to tend to accidents and other emergencies in the area. Lilah had a deep fear of flying since her Mother died in a plane crash; but she was not going to let that keep her from doing her job. When she was called out, she went only to find Luke was the pilot and he was acting extremely nervous or he was sick. He claimed he was fine and had been a helicopter pilot in the army and knew what to do. Reluctantly Lilah went with him on the helicopter. Was her luck going to always be bad? Could she make the trip without freaking out? What would happen between the two of them?

Beautiful book for aviation and war plane enthusiasts

Adam Tooby only got into creating aviation art 6 years ago and now has an artbook filled with amazing artworks. That's really impressive.

Warbirds is a large coffee table hardcover artbook that features more than 200 artworks of military planes from over the last 100 years of aviation. These planes are from before and after the first and second World War. Actually the most recent jet featured is the Mig-29 with its maiden flight in 1977.

The book starts with a lengthy and insightful Q&A interview about his work and inspiration. At the end is a step by step breakdown, including screenshots, of how he models and textures the planes. It's not a tutorial where you can follow along though, but it's interesting to know the creative process.

Tooby uses 3D Studio Max with Photoshop and Illustrator to create his artworks. He would visit museums and places where the planes are displayed to take hundreds of photos, then gather whatever blueprints and information available before modelling the planes in 3D. That is a lot of groundwork and his work rate is very inspiring.

The artworks are wonderful, either rendered individually or featured in flights during war. Details are amazing, right down to the rivets on the legendary Spitfire, the shine of the metal, the weather worn paint peeling surfaces on the wings of the planes, or the words, logos and decorations on the plane bodies. The artworks are printed huge, sometimes across the whole 3 page gatefold.

Each plane featured comes with specifications, a writeup on the history and variations of upgrades. There's a lot to read and should appeal to aviation or World War buff.

This is a beautiful and informative book. I hope there will be future volume covering planes that weren't included this time round.

Great Artwork, but..........

Got this book today, because like other reviewers stated the artwork is fascinating in detail. Every page depicts the moment in history as if you were there. My only critique of this book and I say this as a member of the military (24+ years now) and being the fighter business the entire time of my career is the "details are not in the details". Page 161, 162 and 163 show F-4 Phantoms in combat over Vietnam carrying AIM-9L/M Sidewinders? This missile was not operational in the fleet until 1977. The famous engagement of Lt. Randy "Duke" Cunningham and Lt (JG) Willie "Irish" Driscoll on 10 May 1972 (page 164) shows Showtime 100 carrying AIM-9 Limas or Mikes (easy to tail by the forward canards that distinguish them from earlier variants) and the engagement depicted what appears to be over snow capped mountains of North Vietnam in the spring of '72???? The mission was a strike on the rail yards of Hai Dong (probably mis-spelled) southeast of Hanoi near the coast. To me the art is so well detailed I noticed things like this and others, but!! Do not let my nit picking take away from this great coffee table book. Look forward to reading it from front to back. It would have been a five to me it would have been a bit more historically accurate.

Wonderful Warbirds

This is a really beautiful book. Like a previous reviewer I had some problems with a few of the captions and the errors contained within but they in no way detract from the enjoyment of the book.
A usual complaint I have about aviation art books is that there's too little art and too many words but that is not the case at all here. Marvelous, large, numerous illustrations make the book thoroughly enjoyable.
My only complaint comes from the retired fighter pilot side of me and it's a complaint I have with most aviation artists... even in the midst of a swirling dogfight all of the aircraft illustrated have their flight controls dead neutral; no deflection of ailerons, rudders or elevators, even in aircraft shown generating wingtip vortices because they are pulling "G's" (hard to do with your elevator in neutral). But this is something that most folks won't even notice and it certainly didn't keep me from loving the book.

Another Hit from Renita Pizzitola!

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Just a Little Crush (Crush #1) and enjoyed it so much that I jumped at the chance to also read an ARC of Just a Little Flirt (Crush #2). I'm so glad I did because I loved it every bit as much as the first book, if not more.

Too much time spent partying and hooking up with guys has left Fallon close to flunking out of college. But she's taking her summer internship in the pediatric ward of a hospital seriously and is determined to turn things around. She even bets a friend that she can make it through the six week internship without sleeping with anyone at work.

That was before she ran into (literally) Cade, who volunteers with his therapy dog, Scout, and spends time with the kids at the hospital. He's the hottest guy Fallon has ever seen and just happens to also be sweet and funny and genuinely interested in Fallon. But guys like Cade don't go for girls like Fallon, right?

A history of one-night stands since arriving at college left Fallon with quite a reputation. She's a party girl who isn't shy about her escapades. But an opportunity to be hired on as a staff member following her internship has Fallon determined to put her reputation to rest and be taken seriously. There was so much more to Fallon than just partying and random hook-ups. As I learned more about her background and her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, she became easier to understand and much more relatable. She was determined not to get burned again and thought she knew the best way to avoid it. True love and happily ever after might be for other people but not her.

I loved watching the relationship develop between Fallon and Cade. It was a slow burn, but with plenty of heat! Fallon was determined to not fall into her same pattern and not do anything to jeopardize her internship (plus win that bet). But her attraction to Cade was undeniable and, to her great surprise, it was more than that. Cade was fun and sexy and kind and considerate. But good guys like Cade just didn't get involved with girls like Fallon. Despite Fallon's doubts, Cade's attention doesn't wane and she finds herself more and more attracted to this guy... and not just to his looks.

Fallon was so determined that she didn't deserve a guy like Cade and I loved how Cade ever so patiently showed Fallon how he saw her. And that was my favorite thing about Cade - his patience and his willingness to give Fallon the time she needed to open herself to a relationship with him. Sweet and sexy, funny and understanding... Cade might be the best book boyfriend ever.

Despite the almost-instant attraction between these two, there was no insta-love and their relationship took time to build. Watching as they slowly got to know each other was a joy. I loved their banter and Pizzitola has an amazing gift with dialogue and humor. There were several laugh out loud moments which doesn't happen often for me.

Confession time: If I know in advance that an animal plays any significant role in a book chances are I'm going to pass on it. I'm just not an "animal/pet person" and don't typically enjoy books where animals/pets are featured. I even cringed a little when I first read that Cade was a therapy dog handler. But what a surprise it was to find that I loved what Scout added to the story. Not only did I not mind in the case but I warmed to Scout and I even got a bit emotional at one particular scene. The fact that I was able to overcome my initial bias and actually enjoy this aspect of the story is something that I credit completely to Pizzitola's writing.

There were so many times when I caught myself smiling as I read this book. It quite literally put a smile on my face. And that's what I loved most about this book. Pizzitola's creation of two characters that I was totally invested in, truly pulling for, and who just made me happy. This is only my second book by Renita Pizzitola but I already feel that I'll be reading anything she writes from now on.

Just a Little Flirt is the second book in the Crush series but can easily be read as a stand-alone.

LOVED IT!

How can you NOT fall in love with a sexy dog handler that works with children? That is EXACTLY the problem Fallon Carr is facing. Being precariously close to flunking out of college because of her partying ways, Fallon has sworn off men at work and promised herself to leave her bad reputation behind to focus on her internship working with pediatric patients. She wants a paid position, and she is going to have to change her ways to get it. Then here is Cade Ryan…only the sexiest guy she’s ever seen. Talk about bad timing! What’s a girl to do?

Renita Pizzitola writes a gripping story, making use of every word. The main characters are well developed. You care about them. You find yourself wanting them to get together from the beginning. They are taken with each other almost immediately - SO cute. Cade is a swoon-worthy hero…and he really IS a hero. I wish every single woman could have a Cade Ryan. Fallon is a very lucky girl. He is smokin’ hot and a total sweetheart. You can’t help but fall in love with him. Can Fallon let down the walls she has built around her heart?

Renita Pizzitola pulls out all the stops in this highly enjoyable, insightful, heartfelt and funny look at romantic entanglement. It is a sweet story. I really enjoyed it, and highly recommend!

Light-Refreshing-Great Read!

4.5 Stars here! What a refreshing story.
Here you have Fallon - 19 yrs old girl who missed out on alot of "social" activities in high school due to the fact she was in a serious - 3 yr - relationship. This relationship ended when she left for college along with her loss of her "V" card. Lets say she made up for lost time her freshman yr in college. Now its summer time and she stayed so she could intern at Child Life and take a summer course. She is determined not screw this up along with not screwing any "work" with guys. Here she meets Cade. He is a senior in college and volunteers as a life therapy dog instructor at the Child Life Center. His therapy dog is Scout.. Love him :) The dog that is.. Well and Cade. Cade is the nice guy she never new existed.... She runs smack into him while running up the stairs to keep from being late for her first day internship.. And the story begins. She finds out there is will be a paid intern position and the end of the summer.. So all the interns are excited and willing to do whatever. Fallon, is doing a good job at the internship.. Some if any beer and no late nights... But then the guys at work start hitting on her and then she starts actually falling for Cade. Will she break down and have sex with the work guys? Will she finally give into her feelings for Nice Guy Cade?

The relationship with Cade grows over the story but she is determined not to mix work with pleasure :)

The relationship between Fallon and her friends is fun filled with bantering. Not to mention Fallon loves the sexual innuendos :)

I love the honesty between Fallon and her dad, Fallon with Cade... And I also like how the story with Fallon and her sister unfolds. I never saw the twist that would happen between Fallon and the other interns.

Dual POV between Fallon and Cade... Just a Little Flirt was a great read that didn't have any whinning drawn out situations. Oh, and the sex between the two was perfect. Would definitely recommend!

In-depth, step-by-step study

A nice addition to her standard studies! I am enjoying this in-depth, slow, and intentional look at Ecclesiastes. I do wish it would have gone through more proofreading to catch grammatical errors, and that the space allotted for recording answers was based on the question itself rather than being standard throughout, but these are obviously small things compared to the value of soaking in the message of this book of the Bible. Thanks to Courtney and her mom for the time invested!

I can wholeheartedly recommend this excellent study. It is well researched, well written, and purely based on Scripture. It is a short study, requiring about 15-20 minutes per day, but surprisingly deep. I enjoyed it very much and will not hesitate to purchase Courtney's next study.

Excellent resource for specific labor market analysis topics

I am a labor economist working with huge amounts of data building complex time series analysis models. One of the more vexing problems to solve is dealing with exogenous impacts on labor market trends. With the change of administration (Obama 2009) there will be significant monetary policy interventions that will have a large impact on the labor market. The Heckman & Robb chapters on evaluating the impact of interventions is an excellent treatment complete enough from me to build from. For that section alone I would give the book a 5.

A science fiction thriller with a difference

What struck me first when I set eyes upon the book was the cover. The pair of eyes with ऊँ (“AUM” ) on the forehead had an unsettling effect. The eyes looked deep and haunting. They beckoned one to open the pages and discover the story within.

REVIEW
The “warning” and the “request” at the start had me intrigued. The “Warning” was, “In order to avoid plot – spoilers do not flip through the pages or read mid- sections.” Now being one who often enjoys flipping through pages and reading mid – sections, I wondered how I’d be able to stop myself. But then I decided to go by the Author’s wish. After all there had to be a reason, or why would there be this special warning? The ‘request’ was not to give away the details of the plot in blogs, social media sites or other media channels. Hence in deference to the wishes of the author I will not reveal the contents here.

What to look for in the book?

The book spans over different periods of time both present and past. The tagline “Quantum physics meets Bible & Vedas in the background of Kashmir and cricket,” has one intrigued. What struck me was the amount of research that must have gone into the birth and growth of the book.

However, let me make it clear that the book is not all about quantum physics, mythology or the Vedas and the Bible. It is not just a Science Fiction thriller. There is more in there. There is politics, cricket, espionage and a bit of romance too in the plot. In short it is like a Kashmiri Carpet with different hues and designs.

The book keeps the reader wondering what cricket has to do with terrorism. What is there in Mansur Haider an ordinary Kashmiri youth that makes him so important to Pakistan, China, CIA and the Swedish Intelligence? Another character that interests one is Samir, Mansur Haider’s friend. Why is he hell bent on seeing Mansur get a place in the Indian cricket team and that too fast? The Author I must say, has kept up the suspense well till the very end. The answer that one gets in the last few pages is something one would not even have dreamt of in his/ her wildest dreams. What a twist!!

How did I find the book? Did it meet my expectations?

I must admit that this is one book that took me a lot of time to complete. The language is simple. But the story had me confused at times, making me go back and forth to get a proper grip of what the author wanted to convey. The length of the book in my opinion could have been cut short by a few pages. The illustrations, the maps and the quotes have added to the value of the book. The effort that has gone into the making of the book is indeed commendable. I was expecting something different from the normal thriller and yes, ‘Baramulla Bomber’ is different.

For a debut novel this indeed is an achievement. I am sure that the next in the series will be one step forward and will keep the reader’s hooked.

My Recommendation-

If you are looking for something serious then ‘yes’ this is one book you must read.

Baramulla Bomber by Clark Prasad is an intelligently woven plot and the story has been presented in a smart way to build a quite interesting suspense thriller. There is a deep conspiracy building up against India jointly by China and Pakistan to create big chaos by means of terrorist activities. The means this time chosen by the two countries to create havoc in India are fool proof and scientifically strong enough to meet success as desired and having lower risks. The story is highly politically driven with China and Pakistan generating circumstances to get Kashmir free from Indian regime.

The roots of this enhances weapon being built go back to Indian Vedas on the basis of which Pakistani scientist builds a weapon for a mass destruction. The weapon has been developed, and tested so as to establish its credibility. There are many international agencies involved to get the crux of this destructible plan against India which include - the U.S. CIA, Swedish intelligence, Russian intelligence and Indian intelligence services working independently in isolation at times and uniting together to share information and bring each other on same platform so as to take the action against those destroying forces of China and Pakistan.

Mansur Haider is a new fast bowler inducted in Indian National Cricket Team to play against visiting Australian team on home grounds. Mansur, though has been recently recognized with just 2 national level matches to his credit, but has emerged as a strong contender with 150+ speed of his bowling that surprised everyone in the selection team. And along with this extraordinary high speed with which Mansur is able to throw the ball on ground, it also carries a good amount of accuracy and variance to make it much threatening for the batsmen. Mansur is one among many who is being traced and tracked by intelligence agencies being thought as part of this conspiracy. Aahana Yajurvedi is Mansur's girlfriend, and is an super brave girl having superb expertise in many sports.

The story of Baramulla Bomber by Clark Prasad has a number of interesting characters like Adolf Silfverskiold, a Swedish Intelligence Office and a non believer in God. He carries a pocket Bible just because his girlfriend Mikaela who is a superb musician and dancer and a firm believer in God. It is because of Mikaela that Adolf has to accompany her to Church and attend to Prayers. Carina Leijonhufvud is chief of Swedish Intelligence and Adolf's superior. There are much more interesting characters in the story - Indian Home Minister - Agastya Rathore, and a series of ministers at both sides - India and Pakistan.

The story of Baramulla Bomber takes you to the power of Om, Aum or its corresponding sounding words in other religions. In this 314 pages intelligently woven grasping and hooking story written by Clark Prasad, I could find only one mistake done by proof reader i.e. on page 268 - l is tossed off from language (Talim language --> Talim angauge). There are some very interesting quotes throughout that will hit to your heart or brain, that will make you serious, that will amuse you or will force you to think aloud. For instance there is an interesting and amusing discussion about balls between Adolf and Aahana on page 272.

Overall Baramulla Bomber by Clark Prasad is an interesting suspense thriller to keep you intact and engrossed in its plot and story throughout - right from the word 'go'. Kudos to Suraj Prasad for writing an interesting and engrossing story.
